Role Overview:
The Kitchen Commis is essential in supporting the culinary team with food preparation, cooking, and upholding high standards of culinary excellence within the restaurant. This role requires close collaboration with chefs and kitchen staff to ensure seamless operations, adherence to recipes, quality standards, and timely delivery of outstanding dishes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in food preparation tasks such as chopping, peeling, and portioning ingredients according to established recipes and guidelines.
  • Support chefs in cooking and presenting menu items promptly and consistently, ensuring quality standards and plating guidelines are met.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for food preparation and cooking techniques to maintain consistency and excellence in food production.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of workstations, including countertops, cutting boards, utensils, and equipment, ensuring proper cleaning, sanitizing, and storage.
  • Assist in receiving and storing food deliveries, checking for quality, freshness, and appropriate storage conditions.
  • Monitor and control food stock levels by ordering adequate quantities, rotating inventory, managing item availability, and notifying supervisors of any shortages or discrepancies.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and sanitation guidelines, including proper food handling, storage, and labeling to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with the kitchen team to ensure efficient workflow, smooth communication, and timely task completion.
  • Assist chefs in preparing ingredients according to established recipes and portion sizes accurately.
  • Help set up cooking stations before service and maintain cleanliness throughout the kitchen.
  • Regularly clean and sanitize workstations, equipment, and utensils to ensure a hygienic kitchen environment.
  • Support in maintaining kitchen equipment by following proper cleaning procedures and reporting any maintenance needs or malfunctions.
  • Participate in training sessions and culinary workshops to enhance skills, expand knowledge, and stay updated with industry trends and best practices.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn from senior kitchen staff, embrace feedback positively, and strive for continuous improvement in culinary skills.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; culinary education or relevant certifications are a plus.
  • Previous experience as a kitchen Commis or in a similar role within a culinary establishment is advantageous.
  • Basic knowledge of culinary techniques, food preparation, and cooking methods is desirable.
  • Passion for food and a strong desire to learn and grow in a culinary career.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow recipes and instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with the kitchen team and effectively take direction from supervisors.
  • Physical stamina and ability to stand, bend, lift, and carry heavy objects as required in a kitchen environment.
  • Flexibility to work in shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
