About the Role

Covanta is seeking an experienced Operations Area Director to lead our regional operations team. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for driving operational excellence and asset availability across the region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safety Leadership: Foster a culture of safety and environmental stewardship, driving proactive plant maintenance and planning to ensure operational excellence.
  • Performance Management: Measure and track key performance indicators (KPIs), providing leadership for root cause analysis and corrective action plans to ensure effective resolution of issues.
  • Operational Excellence: Ensure a consistent and integrated approach to facility operations and maintenance, driving effective planning, communication, and process sharing.
  • Business Growth: Collaborate with commercial teams and Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) to drive growth in the region, delivering P&L targets and detailed plans for waste mix, routing, and execution.
  • Facility Management: Drive facility production and equipment availability, addressing potential operating deficiencies and coordinating corporate and field support to develop and implement effective operating plans.
  • Talent Development: Coach and develop WTE and MPF leaders on safety and P&L management, identifying succession opportunities and preparing talent for operations leadership roles.
  • Community Engagement: Encourage and lead by example, demonstrating Covanta's value proposition in our communities and marketplace through active community involvement.
  • Change Management: Drive change management for operations initiatives, adapting new tools, processes, and programs to support business growth and transformation.
  • Reporting and Compliance: Ensure accurate and standard reporting using key performance indicators, ensuring prompt attention to and resolution of issues when required.
  • Asset Performance: Support assessments of asset performance, analyzing and documenting deviations to ensure lessons are captured and used to keep policies and programs current.
  • Lean Management: Serve as champion for Lean Management processes, driving process improvements and creating countermeasures to resolve root causes of problems and inconsistencies.
  • Capital Planning: Partner with engineering and PMO to conduct capital expenditure planning, global engineering standards, budgeting, forecasting, and facility master planning.
  • Compliance and Best Practices

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in operations management, with at least 5 years' supervisory experience in a leadership role.
  • Experience leading multiple operational sites (O&M) execution, with a track record of safety leadership and P&L management.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or related field; advanced degree is preferred.
  • Lean Certification is desirable.
  • Solid business acumen with an understanding of the financial implications on the P&L, new process technology development, scale up, and process improvement.
  • Ability to drive a culture of dedication to process safety, worker safety, and environmental stewardship.
  • Understanding of power market dynamics and strategies, plant operation, and the intersection of these areas is preferred.
  • Successful experience interacting with Federal, State, and local regulators, legislators, permitting agencies, and other community organizations is preferred.
