The Scientific Support Specialist will provide technical support to the science department, including assisting in practical classes and demonstrations. The role involves organizing resources, assembling apparatus, and clearing away promptly after each lesson.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Organize technical support for practical classes and demonstrations.

  2. Prepare resources and assemble apparatus as needed.

  3. Clear away equipment and materials promptly after each lesson.

  4. Provide technical advice to teachers, technicians, and students.

  5. Carry out risk assessments for practical activities.

  6. Maintain an orderly working environment in the prep rooms and labs.

  7. Take a role in designing, developing, and maintaining specialist resources and long-term projects.

  8. Offer professional guidance, assistance, and support to pupils and teachers on practical aspects of the curriculum.

  9. Design, construct, and modify apparatus as needed.

  10. Set up and care for plant and animal collections.

  11. Prepare standard solutions, purify chemicals, and treat waste.

  12. Ensure health and safety requirements are met by staying up-to-date with relevant literature and attending relevant courses.

  13. Give health and safety advice to technical staff, teachers, and students.

  14. Dispose of hazardous waste materials and organize storage in secure conditions.

  15. Monitor and review health and safety procedures and information resources.

  16. Check fume cupboards, pressure vessels, and first-aid kits; perform electrical and other safety checks.

  17. Organize, store, and check the condition of chemicals and equipment.

  18. Repair or replace equipment as needed.

  19. Ensure departmental resources are maintained to required standards.

  20. Liaise with the school operations team to ensure labs are clean and equipment works effectively.

  21. Ensure availability of suitable materials and equipment; suggest alternatives for suitability and economy.

  22. Maintain stock control and appropriate records.
