New York University Abu Dhabi(NYUAD) and invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate inremote sensing to document and analyze spatial and temporal trendsin coastal change in the United Arab Emirates and surroundingArabian Gulf nations. The Arabian region has population growthrates that are more than double the global average coupled withrapid economic development. Consequently there has been dramaticgrowth of urbanization across the region in recent decadeparticularly along coastlines. Coastal modification throughinfilling reclamation channel and inland waterway dredging has beena common feature of development in this region with urbanizationexpanding built surfaces green spaces and other elements of cities.This has sometimes come at a cost to coastal ecosystems although insome cases it has coincided with their expansion. The candidatewill utilize past and contemporary imagery to document and analyzesuch trends.
The position will be under thesupervision of Prof. John Burt head of the NYUADMarine Biology Lab. The candidate will be hired within therecently established Center for Interacting Urban Networks CITIESan interdisciplinary research center focused on regionalenvironmental change where Burt is an Investigator. The candidatewill work with a diverse interdisciplinary group of researchersunder Burts supervision within CITIES the Marine Biology Laboratorythe Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental SciencesACCESS the Center for Genomics and Systems BiologyCGSB and the Water Research CenterWRC.
The candidate will work closelywith two other researchers under Burts supervision (from the socialsciences and from marine science) as part of this collaborativeproject integrating information from remote sensing with studies onecological and social impacts that have resulted from recenturbanization. The goal will be in part to better understand theextent of coastal change that has occurred in recent decades thepositive and negative consequences of coastal development and todevelop recommendations for policy makers to enhance sustainabilityof these practices going forward.
The position isscheduled begin on 1 Sept. 2022 and will extend for two years (thestart date is flexible) with renewal possible depending onperformance and budgets. Candidates must have a PhD inenvironmental science geospatial sciences or related fields as wellas firstauthor publishing experience relevant to the positiondescription (Masters degree holders may be considered if they havea very strong relevant publication record). Experience using GoogleEarth Engine analytical toolkits for spatiotemporal landuse changewould be considered an asset as would integrating remote sensingwith GIS. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience inanalyses of a diverse array of coastal habitat/infrastructuretypes. Experience in groundtruthing is ideal particularly if thecandidate has boating and/or SCUBAexperience.
Salary will be contingent onexperience and the position comes with a very attractive salary andbenefits package including a housing allowance annual flights andtuition for children (if relevant) and medical insurance.
