Background The International Renewable Energy Agency is an inter-governmental organisation headquartered in Abu Dhabi, mandated to promote the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity. IRENA's mission is to play a leading role in the ongoing transformation of the global energy systems by acting as a centre of excellence for knowledge and innovation, a global voice of renewable energy, and as a network hub for all stakeholders offering advice and support to countries. At present, IRENA has 168 Members (167 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and other States in the process of accession and actively engaged. Working within the Office of the Director General, the Communications Unit is responsible for developing and implementing a strategy to market IRENA products and services, expand IRENA's stakeholder network and increase its engagement, and to support the various divisions in their implementation of the Work Programme in relation to communications.

Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Chief Communications Officer, the Communications Officer is responsible for the following duties:

Develop multi-media communication campaigns for outreach to specialised, corporate and industry media; implement and coordinate these campaigns, ensuring that they are continually monitored and evaluated with a view to taking corrective action where necessary;

Build strong connections to the media, including local and regional Arab media based on an outstanding knowledge of their motivations, aims and priorities. Undertake support and assistance to the IRENA Director-General during his or her missions and events. In coordination with other Communications Officers, plan, draft and finalise the following English language written content: website articles, press releases, email marketing campaigns and social media content. Coordinate translations of written content with external translation companies and finalize material in preparation for distribution and occasionally perform Arabic translation services as required. Provide media relations support to the Communication Unit, with a particular focus on building and maintaining relationships with local and regional Arabic speaking media; and draft official invitations and general correspondence with Arabic media in the Arabic language. Manage Agency media mailing lists, including global press mailing lists. Refine and update distribution lists regularly to ensure maximum effectiveness of all communications outreach. Conduct daily media monitoring, and summarise key news highlights of the day through online software to IRENA member focal points. Maintain and manage Agency relationships with key external monitoring and distribution vendors including, but not limited to Csion and Meltwater; and monitor IRENA's '' email inbox, ensuring that the Agency responds to enquiries from journalists in a timely and professional manner.

General Requirements: Strategic thinker, with a good understanding of how strategy and policy drives communications; Strong organizational and planning skills with experience in engaging managers across departments; Comfortable working in multinational, sensitive and fast-moving communications, advocacy and/or fundraising contexts; Ability to produce and interpret a broad range of online communications analytics to inform strategies and work plans; Sophisticated understanding of multimedia content, including how it can best be produced, packaged, published and shared on websites and social media; Proven ability to conceptualise, plan and execute ideas as well as transfer knowledge and skills; Proven skills in planning, communication, networking, negotiation, and the ability to speak to different audiences; Competencies Professionalism: A proven knowledge of both renewable energy issues and the global network of the renewable energy community, including specialised media; Knowledge of different aspects of public information and communication and understanding of the needs of the media and the way this sector functions; Ability to assess worldwide communication environments, develop communication strategies and management implementation of public information campaigns with various promotional and publicity techniques; Strong editorial judgement, including ethical and political awareness; Sound political judgement to diplomatically handle sensitive issues and cultivate productive relationships. Ability to deliver oral presentations/statements to diverse audiences. Communication: Strong drafting skills, including ability to write/edit different types of content (publication summaries, articles, speeches) for various audiences. Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication. Technological Awareness: Knowledge of the Lumen 5 software tool for digital communications on social media and across other specialised media; Ability to work autonomously with strong project management, research and planning skills; ability to work under pressure and to set goals, make plans, define deadlines and deliver on time. Creativity: Ability to create innovative ways of how to address the different audiences of IRENA effectively and how to distribute the Agency's message in the best possible way.

Qualifications Education: Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in journalism, communications, public relations or related field; A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Experience / Skills / Ability: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public relations, journalism, international relations or related area. Experience of working directly with the head of an organization on their media profile during missions and other international events. Experience producing, editing and disseminating content for diverse audiences, including media outlets, international brands, political parties, NGOs, or other international institutions. Previous experience of communicating the broad range of issues related to renewable energy is desirable. Strong organizational and planning skills with experience of organizing press conferences, press briefings, and interviews. Comfortable working in multinational, sensitive and fast-moving communications, advocacy and/or fundraising contexts; Strong research background and the ability to produce and interpret a broad range of online communications analytics to inform strategies and work plans; Proven ability to conceptualise, plan and execute ideas as well as transfer knowledge and skills; Proven skills in planning, communication, networking, negotiation, and the ability to speak to different audiences; Excellent knowledge of Meltwater and Cision and computer skills (MS Office essential; Excel, Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Premiere Pro an asset).

Language Excellent command of written and spoken English and highly developed writing and editing skills is required. Knowledge of other languages, particularly Arabic, is desirable. ***
