The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The United Nations Environment (UNEP) is the United Nations system\'s designated entity that addresses environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) aims to conserve terrestrial, aquatic and avian migratory species throughout their range. It is an intergovernmental treaty, concluded under the aegis of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), concerned with the conservation of wildlife and habitats on a global scale. The Aquatic Species Team is responsible for the coordination of several daughter agreements which were established under the umbrella of CMS. This includes binding Agreements (ASCOBANS) and Memoranda of Understanding for specific species or species groups (turtles, sirenians, sharks and rays, cetaceans). Furthermore, the team is in charge of coordinating the implementation of COP Decisions, Resolutions and Concerted Action related to aquatic species.

The internship positions are located in Bonn, Germany and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Please indicate in your application which duty station you are applying to. The internship is unpaid and fulltime. Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual\xe2\x80\x99s background, the intern\xe2\x80\x99s assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the supervision of Programme Officer / CMS Aquatic Species Team, tasks during the internship may include the following:
  • undertake literature reviews on marine mammals, sharks, rays, sirenians or turtle species or threats that are affecting them
  • contribute to the preparation of background documents for CMS, ASCOBANS and MOU meetings
  • assist in the preparation of publications and other outreach material, including the websites
  • contribute to the development of strategies and action plans
  • assist in the preparation and follow-up of meetings and workshops
  • assist with the implementation of Concerted Action for aquatic species
  • assist with the implementation of Decisions taken at the 13th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CMS (COP13) and preparations for COP14
  • assist with the development of capacity-building materials (e.g. videos, presentations, handouts) for physical and online workshops and courses
  • participate at appropriate internal meetings of the Secretariat
  • contribute to tasks related to Memoranda of Understanding for aquatic species (for example: Dugong MOU, Sharks MOU, IOSEA Marine Turtle MOU or the Pacific Islands Cetaceans MOU)
  • assist with the implementation of other aspects of the Secretariats\xe2\x80\x99 work programmes Competencies Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients\xe2\x80\x99 environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

    • Has dealt with the issue of aquatic wildlife and/or habitat conservation during studies or during practical experience (internships, voluntary or paid work)
    • Understands the key issues affecting the conservation status of biodiversity in general, and migratory aquatic species in particular
    • Standard computer skills (Microsoft Office) Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
      a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) related to ecology, zoology, environmental studies, international relations/policy, geography, international law or related fields;
      b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor\'s level or equivalent) related to ecology, wildlife management, nature conservation, environmental policy or community development;
      c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

      AND
      • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
      • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
      • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
      • Have demonstrated ability to work independently and produce high quality written outputs. Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Languages Must be able to work in the English language, while knowledge of French or Spanish would be an advantage.
