Specialist Pulmonology-Part time
Requirements
- Consulting with patients to understand their symptoms and health concerns.
- Diagnosing and treating conditions, such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema.
- Using and interpreting pulmonological exams and tests to aid in the diagnosis of cardiopulmonary diseases and conditions, including CT scans, chest fluoroscopies, ultrasounds, and bronchoscopies.
- Performing various specialized procedures in order to acquire samples of the chest wall lining or the lungs, for further analysis.
- Providing immunizations against preventable cardiopulmonary diseases.
- Maintaining detailed notes of appointments with patients, including comments, tests and/or treatments prescribed, and test results.
- Referring patients to cardiothoracic surgeons, when necessary.
- Advising cardiothoracic surgeons of the risk status of patients and recommending interventions to minimize risk, especially in tuberculosis cases.
- Providing support and advice to patients receiving long-term care.
- Conducting research into the testing and development of new medications and methods of treatment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in biology, physical sciences, or a related field.
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.
- Valid and active medical license.
- Excellent communicator who can empathize with patients.
Medical Expertise in Respiratory Diseases
- Extensive knowledge of the respiratory system and diseases that affect the lungs and airways.
- Expertise in diagnosing and treating chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension.
- Ability to recognize symptoms of severe lung conditions, including pneumonia, tuberculosis, sleep apnea, and interstitial lung diseases.
- Proficiency in interpreting diagnostic tests, such as pulmonary function tests (PFTs), chest X-rays, CT scans, and arterial blood gas tests.
Patient Assessment and Diagnosis
- Skill in conducting thorough patient evaluations, including taking detailed medical histories, performing physical exams, and ordering appropriate tests.
- Ability to interpret medical tests to make accurate diagnoses and determine the most effective treatment plans.
- Knowledge of the symptoms and early warning signs of serious pulmonary conditions like lung cancer and advanced COPD.
Advanced Diagnostic Techniques
- Expertise in utilizing bronchoscopy (a procedure to view the airways and lungs) for diagnostic purposes, such as diagnosing lung infections, cancers, or obtaining tissue samples for biopsy.
- Skilled in interpreting pulmonary function tests (PFTs) to assess lung capacity, airway function, and the presence of any restrictive or obstructive lung diseases.
- Experience with sleep studies (polysomnography) to diagnose conditions like sleep apnea.
Treatment and Management of Pulmonary Diseases
- Proficiency in prescribing and managing treatments for chronic respiratory diseases, including medications (e.g., inhalers, corticosteroids, bronchodilators), oxygen therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation.
- Ability to manage complex cases, such as patients with severe COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, or respiratory failure.
- Experience with advanced treatments like mechanical ventilation, non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV), and lung transplant evaluation and care.
Diagnosing Respiratory Conditions
- Diagnosing conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, sleep apnea, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary embolism, and lung cancer.
- Performing and interpreting diagnostic tests such as chest X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, sputum cultures, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), and bronchoscopy.
Treating Respiratory Disorders
- Prescribing and managing medications to control respiratory diseases, including inhalers, oral medications, and intravenous treatments.
- Monitoring patients' respiratory function over time and adjusting treatment plans as necessary.
- Using medical devices such as ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP machines for patients with respiratory failure or sleep apnea.
Managing Chronic Conditions
- Managing long-term respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD, pulmonary hypertension, and cystic fibrosis to improve the patient's quality of life.
- Coordinating care with other specialists, such as cardiologists, infectious disease specialists, or oncologists, when respiratory diseases overlap with other medical conditions.
Performing Procedures
- Conducting procedures such as bronchoscopy, which involves inserting a flexible tube through the mouth or nose to examine the airways and lungs, and thoracentesis, which involves removing fluid from the pleural space.
- Performing sleep studies and managing treatments like CPAP therapy for patients with sleep apnea.
Collaboration with Other Healthcare Professionals
- Working with pulmonary rehabilitation specialists to create and manage rehabilitation programs for patients with chronic lung disease.
- Coordinating with thoracic surgeons for patients who may require surgery, such as lung transplant or removal of tumors.
- Collaborating with other specialists, including oncologists for lung cancer patients, and cardiologists for patients with pulmonary hypertension or heart-lung conditions.
Patient Education and Lifestyle Counseling
- Teaching patients about proper inhaler technique, medication adherence, lifestyle modifications, and the importance of exercise and physical activity to maintain lung function.
- Providing guidance on smoking cessation, including behavioral therapy, medication, and counseling, for patients with tobacco-related lung conditions.
Research and Development
- Engaging in research to explore new treatments for pulmonary diseases, contributing to the development of advanced therapies and improving patient outcomes.
- Participating in clinical trials or publishing research findings in medical journals to advance the field of pulmonology.
