An Application TestingEngineer plays a critical role in ensuring thatsoftware applications are reliable, functional, and meet userexpectations. To excel in this role, certain technical and softskills are essential. Below is a detailed skill set typicallyexpected from an Application Testing Engineer:

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-onexperience as Application Testing Engineer.

TestingFundamentals

  • Understanding of Software DevelopmentLife Cycle (SDLC): Knowledge of different models like Waterfall,Agile, and DevOps.
  • Testing Life Cycle (STLC):Understanding the various phases such as test planning, testdesign, test execution, defect tracking, andreporting.
  • Types of Testing: Proficient infunctional and non-functional testing methods suchas:
  • Functional Testing: Unit, Integration,System, Sanity, Regression, SmokeTesting.
  • Non-Functional Testing: Performance,Load, Stress, Usability, Compatibility, SecurityTesting.
  • Manual and AutomatedTesting.
  • Test Case Design: Writing detailedtest cases based on requirements and use cases, and ensuring theycover both positive and negative scenarios.

Automation TestingTools

  • Scripting & ProgrammingSkills: Ability to write test scripts using languageslike:
  • .NET, Java, Python, JavaScript, Ruby, orC#.
  • Proficient in automation frameworks such asSelenium, TestNG, JUnit, Appium (for mobile testing), orCucumber.
  • Continuous Integration Tools:Knowledge of CI/CD tools like Jenkins, GitLab, CircleCI, or Bambooto automate test execution as part of the buildpipeline.
  • Version Control Systems: Familiaritywith Git, SVN, or similar systems for managing testscripts.

Manual TestingSkills

  • TestPlanning and Execution: Developing test strategies, executing testcases manually, and reporting defects.
  • DefectManagement: Ability to identify, log, and manage defects usingtools like Azure DevOps, JIRA, Bugzilla, Quality Center, orTFS.
  • Exploratory Testing: Investigatingapplications to discover edge cases that aren't coveredby formal test cases.
  • Usability Testing:Ensuring that applications are user-friendly, easy to navigate, andvisually appealing.

  • JSON/XML Handling:Parsing and validating response data in JSON or XMLformat.

SecurityTesting

  • Security Testing Tools: Familiaritywith tools like OWASP ZAP, Burp Suite, or Nessus for identifyingvulnerabilities in applications.
  • Understandingof Common Security Vulnerabilities: Knowledge of the OWASP Top 10security risks such as SQL injection, Cross-Site Scripting (XSS),Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF),etc.
  • Authentication & AuthorizationTesting: Verifying the security of authentication protocols, accesscontrols, and permissions.

MobileTesting

  • Mobile Testing Tools: Knowledge ofmobile testing tools like Appium, MonkeyTalk, or RobotFramework.
  • Cross-Platform Testing: Familiaritywith testing mobile apps across different platforms (iOS, Android)and devices with tools like BrowserStack or SauceLabs.
  • Responsive Design Testing: Testing webapplications for responsiveness on various screen sizes, includingmobile and tablet devices.

DatabaseTesting

  • SQLKnowledge: Ability to write and execute SQL queries to validatedata integrity, perform back-end testing, and verify that data isbeing stored and retrieved correctly.
