The Flight Test Engineer (FTE) plays a critical role in ensuring the success and accuracy of UAV test flights by preparing necessary equipment, recording key flight data, and generating detailed test reports. Working under the guidance of the Flight Test Manager, the FTE is responsible for equipment calibration, data capture, and documentation, as well as facilitating communication among the flight test team, ground stations, and management units.

This role demands a detail-oriented professional with experience in flight testing and data analysis who can maintain a high standard of safety, accuracy, and teamwork in a dynamic test flight environment.

Preparation and Calibration of Test Equipment
  • Set up and calibrate necessary tools, telemetry systems, sensors, and data recording devices for test flights.
  • Conduct pre-flight checks on instruments and sensors to ensure accurate and reliable performance.
  • Maintain equipment usage, calibration, and maintenance logs to monitor the status and readiness of testing tools.
Recording and Analyzing Key Flight Data
  • Capture and document real-time flight data, including telemetry and sensor outputs, to meet test objectives.
  • Verify data accuracy, troubleshoot any observed anomalies, and perform initial analysis to ensure consistency with test goals.
Preparation of Test Flight Reports
  • Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing test objectives, methods, and results, including any identified issues.
  • Use visual aids to support findings and conclusions in reports, ensuring thorough documentation of each test flight.
  • Support the organization and tracking of all test flight documents, including test plans, procedures, and revisions.
  • Ensure documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and accessible to relevant team members.
Manage Communication Flow During Test Flights
  • Act as the primary communication point between flight test teams, ground control, and management during test flights.
  • Implement communication protocols to report test status, coordinate actions, and document key communications and decisions for future reference.
Skills (Technical & Non-Technical)
  • In-depth knowledge of drone systems, including flight controls, sensors, and payloads.
  • Familiarity with drone software platforms.
  • Skills in analyzing telemetry and flight data to assess drone performance and identify issues.
  • Understanding of specific testing protocols.
  • Familiarity with regulations governing drone operations.
  • Strong focus on safety practices during testing, including risk assessment and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to convey complex technical information clearly to team members, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
  • Skills in planning and managing drone test flights, including scheduling and resource allocation.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in flight testing, preferably with remote-controlled aircraft or UAVs.
  • Proficiency in setting up, calibrating, and analyzing data from flight test instrumentation.
  • Experience with various UAV platforms, advanced test instrumentation, and complex test scenarios is desirable.
  • Familiarity with project management and strong communication skills under high-pressure environments is a plus.
Education & Certifications
  • A bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience and proficiency in flight test instrumentation, telemetry systems, and basic data analysis.
  • Master's degree in aerospace engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field is desirable.
  • FAA/GCAA Flight Test Engineer Certification or equivalent.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or advanced certifications.
  • Expertise in advanced flight test instrumentation and analysis, with experience in flight simulation and data visualization software (e.g., MATLAB, LabVIEW).
