Roles and responsibilities

  • Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments for marine projects (e.g., ports, dredging, coastal developments) in compliance with UAE and international regulations.
  • Identify, assess, and propose mitigation measures for environmental risks.
  • Monitor and manage the impact of marine construction activities on ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, and marine fauna.
  • Develop and implement biodiversity conservation plans.
  • Ensure projects meet UAE environmental regulations and standards.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies to obtain necessary environmental permits.
  • Conduct water and sediment quality testing before, during, and after marine construction.
  • Develop strategies to minimize pollution and sedimentation impacts.
  • Oversee the management of waste generated from marine construction projects.
  • Ensure compliance with UAE's waste disposal and recycling regulations.
  • Develop and execute monitoring programs for air, water, and noise pollution.
  • Provide real-time data and recommendations to minimize environmental disruptions.
  • Integrate sustainable practices into marine project designs.
  • Assess climate change impacts on coastal projects and recommend adaptive measures.
  • Prepare environmental management plans (EMP) and compliance reports.
  • Document findings and provide recommendations for environmental improvements.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • 10 years of experience in marine environmental engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in UAE.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Marine Science, or related disciplines.
  • Master's degree in Environmental Science or Coastal Engineering is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in environmental modeling tools and software (e.g., MIKE21, Delft3D).
  • Strong knowledge of UAE and international environmental regulations and standards.
  • Relevant certifications such as ISO 14001 Lead Auditor or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills for environmental impact mitigation.

  1. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Management
    • Conduct EIAs : Lead and manage environmental impact assessments for marine-related projects, identifying and evaluating potential impacts on marine ecosystems, water quality, air quality, and coastal communities.
    • Mitigation Strategies : Develop and implement mitigation measures to minimize adverse environmental effects, including pollution, habitat destruction, and disturbances to marine life.
    • Compliance : Ensure that projects comply with local, national, and international environmental regulations and standards, such as those set by environmental protection agencies or marine protection organizations.
  2. Marine and Coastal Resource Management
    • Ecosystem Protection : Work on initiatives to protect marine biodiversity, including sensitive habitats such as coral reefs, mangroves, and wetlands, and species such as endangered marine mammals, fish, and birds.
    • Sustainable Development : Promote the sustainable development of marine resources, balancing the need for economic growth with environmental protection, particularly in the context of offshore energy, shipping, and coastal infrastructure projects.
    • Coastal Zone Management : Address issues related to coastal zone management, including land reclamation, shoreline protection, and habitat restoration, ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.
  3. Pollution Control and Waste Management
    • Water Quality Monitoring : Oversee the collection and analysis of water quality data, ensuring that projects do not adversely affect water quality by controlling the release of harmful substances, such as oil, sewage, or hazardous materials.
    • Pollution Prevention : Develop and implement pollution prevention strategies, such as spill response planning, waste disposal regulations, and sustainable practices to reduce marine pollution.
    • Marine Waste Management : Ensure proper handling, treatment, and disposal of waste materials, including solid waste, sewage, and hazardous chemicals generated by marine or coastal activities.
  4. Regulatory and Legal Compliance
    • Environmental Regulations : Stay up-to-date on national and international regulations related to marine environments, such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) , International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations , and local environmental laws.
    • Permitting and Approvals : Work with government agencies and stakeholders to secure necessary permits for marine projects, ensuring compliance with environmental impact assessments and mitigation requirements.
    • Environmental Audits : Lead or participate in environmental audits of marine operations, ensuring adherence to environmental policies, regulations, and best practices.
  5. Risk Assessment and Management
    • Hazard Identification : Identify environmental risks associated with marine projects, including oil spills, underwater construction, and coastal erosion.
    • Risk Mitigation Plans : Develop risk management strategies and contingency plans to address potential accidents or environmental disasters, such as marine pollution or habitat destruction.
    • Emergency Response : Coordinate emergency response plans and actions in the event of environmental incidents, including spill response, wildlife rescue, and habitat restoration.
  6. Research and Development
    • Innovative Solutions : Conduct research into new technologies, materials, and processes to minimize environmental impact in marine environments, such as environmentally friendly dredging methods, biodegradable materials, or renewable marine energy sources.
    • Climate Change Adaptation : Assess and develop strategies to address the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems, including rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and changing biodiversity patterns.
    • Sustainability Initiatives : Drive sustainability initiatives related to marine resource extraction, coastal development, and maritime transport, focusing on reducing the carbon footprint and enhancing resilience to environmental stressors.
