DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Confirms test requisitions by cross-referencing information with the Laboratory information system log, addressing any discrepancies with relevant personnel.
- Validates patient identity by reviewing patient identification details.
- Collects blood specimens through various methods, including venipunctures, fingersticks, and heel pricks for infants.
- Ensures specimen integrity by adhering to aseptic techniques, following departmental protocols, and observing isolation procedures.
- Monitors collected specimens by initialing, dating, and recording collection times; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
- Prepares specimens for transportation, ensuring accurate labeling of vials and matching blood specimens to the corresponding patients.
- Orders laboratory supplies as necessary to maintain operational efficiency.
- Upholds quality results by adhering to departmental procedures and testing schedules; documenting results in the quality-control log and identifying necessary changes.
- Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by complying with established standards and procedures, as well as legal and health regulations.
- Addresses unusual test orders by consulting with physicians, pathologists, nursing staff, or reference laboratories; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for clarification and notifying supervisors of any unresolved issues.
- Enhances professional knowledge by engaging in educational opportunities, reading relevant publications, maintaining professional networks, and participating in industry organizations.
- Contributes to the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies, and procedures, as well as compliance with federal regulations and accreditation standards.
- Strengthens the reputation of the laboratory department and the hospital by taking ownership of new and diverse requests and exploring opportunities to enhance job performance.
