Summary: The Director of Packaging, Innovation, and Industrialization will play a pivotal role in driving the strategy and execution across three critical areas: Packaging Development, Packaging Innovation, and Manufacturing. Reporting directly to the VP Development & Operations, you will oversee the seamless integration of technical expertise, innovative thinking, and operational excellence to deliver sustainable, high-quality, and advanced packaging solutions. This leadership role will require a balance of strategic vision, technical expertise, and the ability to inspire cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Leadership:
    1. Develop a forward-thinking strategy for packaging development, innovation, and manufacturing aligned with the brand's goals.
    2. Translate brand objectives into actionable plans, ensuring alignment across all packaging and manufacturing functions.
    3. Stay ahead of market trends, regulatory requirements, and consumer preferences to drive competitive advantage.
  2. Technical Expertise in Packaging Engineering:
    1. Master deep knowledge of packaging materials (plastics, glass, metals, paper/cardboard, biomaterials…) and their mechanical, chemical, and environmental properties.
    2. Oversee the application of manufacturing and transformation processes, including but not limited to glass manufacturing, injection molding, extrusion-blowing, thermoforming, and various printing techniques.
    3. Conduct compatibility and stability tests (formula/packaging) and ensure compliance with different norms (ISO, GMP, FDA…) and other regulatory standards.
    4. Utilize advanced CAD tools (SolidWorks, KeyShot, C4D…) and lead prototyping efforts using 3D printing, digital printing and other technologies.
    5. Supervise industrialization projects, validating production tooling and technical feasibility.
    6. Ensure effective scaling of packaging designs from concept to mass production by validating technical feasibility and production tooling.
  3. Innovation and Sustainability:
    1. Drive packaging innovation initiatives in collaboration with the Packaging Innovation team to integrate new technologies, materials, and sustainable practices (e.g., refillable, recyclable, or bio-sourced solutions).
    2. Identify and implement sustainable packaging solutions that align with the brand's values and minimize environmental impact.
  4. Industrialization Excellence:
    1. Define and implement robust processes for the industrialization of new packaging designs, ensuring seamless transition from R&D to manufacturing.
    2. Collaborate with manufacturing partners to optimize production workflows, reduce lead times, and achieve cost-efficient scaling.
    3. Oversee industrial validation activities, including trial runs, process optimization, and first production approvals.
    4. Develop and monitor KPIs for industrialization, such as defect rates, efficiency rates, and production scalability metrics.
  5. Manufacturing Excellence:
    1. Oversee all manufacturing operations to ensure alignment with production timelines, quality standards, and cost targets.
    2. In collaboration with the QA/QC team, audit supplier facilities to optimize manufacturing processes and ensure compliance with company standards.
    3. Anticipate and mitigate operational risks, ensuring continuity in the supply chain.
  6. Team Leadership and Development:
    1. Lead and inspire a diverse team across Packaging Development, Packaging Innovation, and Manufacturing.
    2. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
    3. Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide coaching, mentoring, and development opportunities.
  7. Project Management and Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    1. Oversee the management of multiple complex projects, ensuring timely delivery, budget adherence, and cross-functional alignment.
    2. Partner with key stakeholders, including R&D, marketing, supply chain, product development, and quality assurance teams, to ensure seamless integration of packaging and manufacturing solutions.
  8. Quality and Compliance:
    1. Collaborate with the QA/QC team to establish robust quality standards for packaging materials and manufacturing processes.
    2. Ensure adherence to all regulatory, ethical sourcing, and environmental standards across global markets.
  9. Financial Optimization:
    1. Identify cost-saving opportunities in packaging development and manufacturing without compromising on quality or brand identity.
    2. Monitor budgets and expenses, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  2. Minimum of 15 years of experience in packaging development, manufacturing, or a related field in the cosmetics or beauty industry.
  3. Proven expertise in packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and CAD/3D design tools.
  4. Strong leadership and people management experience, with a track record of building and inspiring high-performing teams.
  5. Deep understanding of industrialization practices, including production scaling and process validation.
  6. Deep knowledge of sustainability practices and emerging technologies in packaging.
  7. Experience in managing global operations and understanding regional regulatory requirements.
  8. Exceptional project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  9. Soft skills: adaptability, curiosity, team player, confidence, enthusiasm, interpersonal skills.
