The Deputy Head of Design and Engineering is responsible for managing a portfolio of projects in line with the organization's management requirements. This role encompasses all aspects related to the production of successful and constructable design packages, including the enforcement of processes and quality assurance. The candidate will optimize resource utilization, enhance design to save time and costs, and ensure that projects remain on schedule. This position will lead a division that includes Design Management, Studio Management, Architecture, Structure, MEPF, Interiors, Landscape Design, Visualization, and other engineering functions via Sub Consultants. The Deputy Head will operate the Studio as an independent consultant while seamlessly integrating with company workflows.

Responsibilities:

  • Set Vision and Leadership: Define the vision, mission, and philosophy for the studio while guiding the team to achieve business goals.
  • Resource Management: Plan, recruit, and manage human resources, IT, and infrastructure needs to meet organizational requirements.
  • Manage Intellectual Property: Ensure the protection of intellectual property and set standards for deliverables to scale up the studio's performance.
  • Focus on Key Metrics: Maintain a strong focus on cost, time, and quality across existing and upcoming projects.
  • Design Review: Conduct thorough reviews of design aspects and provide strategic input to enhance designs, emphasizing value engineering.
  • Strategic Input: Offer insights on upcoming projects to the Chairman and the Chief Development Officer.
  • Project Efficiency: Review and enhance project efficiency through continuous monitoring and feedback.
  • Commercial Monitoring: Oversee commercial aspects regarding full design packages, including design proposals and coordination with all disciplines.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Assist in resolving design issues in adherence to authority regulations while enforcing coordination procedures.
  • Awareness of Design Standards: Stay updated on the latest design requirements, sustainability standards, and environmental regulations.
  • Design Progress Reviews: Periodically assess project design progress with the Chief Development Officer to ensure compliance with original design direction and budget.
  • Team Management: Direct and manage the design team in modifying existing designs as directed by management.
  • Mentorship: Guide and mentor team members throughout various work processes.
  • External Engagement: Attend meetings with external consultants and regulatory authorities as necessary to ensure compliance and project alignment.

Functional Pre-Requisites and Skills:

  • Educational Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, Construction Management, or an equivalent field. Licensed Architect/Engineer as per Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 25 years, preferably from tier 1 engineering consultancies or master developers, with a demonstrated track record in design and management.
  • Languages Required: Proficiency in English; knowledge of Arabic is a plus.
  • Computer and Software Proficiency:
  • AutoCAD (2D & 3D)
  • Sketch-Up (optional)
  • Proficient in project management software such as PROCORE, ACONEX, PLANGRID.
  • Additional Requirements: Valid driving license, availability for travel, and flexibility in working hours.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to redline submissions and ensure compliance with authority/client briefs, suggesting design improvements as needed.
  • Management Expertise: Proven ability to develop effective management and administration practices.
  • Large Project Delivery: Demonstrated experience in delivering large-scale real estate developments, including premium mixed-use complexes and hospitality projects.
  • Contract Management Skills: Excellent skills in managing contracts and ensuring compliance.
  • Negotiation Skills: Advanced negotiation skills to effectively address potential challenges.
  • Design/Construction Knowledge: Strong understanding of design and construction sequences and efficient management of related workflows.
