Responsibilities of a PracticalNurse

  1. MonitoringPatient Health

    • Takingand recording vital signs, including temperature, pulse,respiration, and blood pressure.
    • Observingpatients for any changes in condition, such as signs of infectionor complications, and reporting them to a registered nurse orphysician.

  2. Assistingwith DailyActivities

    • Helpingpatients with bathing, grooming, dressing, and other personal careneeds.
    • Assisting patients with mobility,including helping them walk or move from one position toanother.

  3. AdministeringMedications

    • Administeringprescribed medications to patients, following thedoctor's orders and hospitalprotocols.
    • Monitoring patients for any adversereactions to medications and reporting these to medicalstaff.

  4. WoundCare andDressings

    • Changingbandages or dressing wounds, observing for signs of infection, andfollowing specific wound careprocedures.
    • Assisting with the care of surgicalsites or chronic wounds like pressureulcers.

  5. ProvidingPatientEducation

    • Educatingpatients about their health conditions, prescribed treatments, andself-care routines.
    • Giving guidance on how tomanage chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, orasthma.

  6. Documentationand RecordKeeping

    • Keepingaccurate and up-to-date records of patient care, vital signs,medications, and any changes incondition.
    • Documenting nursing interventionsand communicating them to other teammembers.

  7. Collaboratingwith HealthcareTeams

    • Working with RNs,doctors, therapists, and other healthcare providers to develop andimplement patient care plans.
    • Assisting inassessments and participating in patient caremeetings.

  8. AssistingwithProcedures

    • Assistingwith diagnostic tests, medical procedures, or surgeries under thesupervision of a physician or RN.
    • Preparingpatients for medical tests or procedures and providing emotionalsupport.

  9. Maintaininga Safe and CleanEnvironment

    • Ensuringthat patient rooms and common areas are clean andsafe.
    • Following infection control protocols andmaintaining a hygienic environment for patientcare.
