Roles and responsibilities

The Staff Nurse is accountable forthe coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care,patient/family education and transitions of care. The Staff Nursesupports professional nursing practice across the continuum of careto meet the needs of the patient and family. The Staff Nurse willunderstand, support and promote the mission, vision and values ofSSMC; provides age-appropriate patient care according to theNursing Scope of Practice as defined by the regulatory body. TheStaff Nurse will adhere to and promote the Professional Nurses Codeof Conduct for Abu Dhabi andUAE.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

Assessment and Diagnosis:Collects and analyzes assessment data to determinediagnosis/issues:

  • Assessescomprehensive data including but not limited to physical,psychosocial, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs andinterprets assessment information to derive the diagnosis or issuesas defined by the patient'scondition.
  • Uses evidence-based assessmenttechniques and instruments in collecting data and validates thediagnosis or issue with the patient, family and healthcare teammembers as appropriate.
  • Prioritizes the dataand information collected based on patient's immediatecondition or anticipated needs and identifies potential risks orbarriers to the patient's health orsafety.
  • Documents the data and informationcollected in compliance with established guidelines and reflectiveof the needs of the patient.

Planning and OutcomesIdentification: Identifies expected outcomes and develops a planthat address health promotion, health restoration and healthmaintenance to attain expected outcomes.

  • Involves patient, family andhealthcare team members in formulating a culturally appropriateindividualized plan of care.
  • Appliesevidence-based nursing practices in developing the individualizedplan of care to attain expected outcomes and continuity ofcare.
  • Modifies the individualized plan of careaccording to the ongoing assessment and reevaluation of thepatient's response, status, and outcomeindicators.
  • Documents the expected outcomes asmeasurable goals in a manner that uses standardized language orrecognized terminology.
Desired candidate profile
  • Implements the plan of care in partnership withthe patient, family and healthcare team members in a timely mannerutilizing evidence-based interventions and treatments specific tothe needs of the patient.
  • Performs treatmentsand procedures according to established procedural guidelines andprotocols.
  • Administers medications according toorganization policies and procedures.
  • Ensuresthat all components of the individualized plan of care, includingmodifications, are documented in the patient's healthrecord.
  • Communicates relevant informationacross all levels of care andorganizations.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledgeof resource consumption and practices within a cost [1] effectiveframework.

Health Teaching AndHealth Promotion:

  • Utilizes teaching strategiesappropriate to the individual patient's condition andlearning needs.
  • Uses health promotion tosupport patients and families in developing skills that promote,maintain, or restore healthy lifestyles and self-managementsupport.
  • Seeks opportunities for feedback andevaluation of the effectiveness of the strategies used, includingteach back.
  • Ensures that all components of thehealth education, relevant to the clinical condition, is documentedin the patient health record.

Evaluation: Evaluates progresstoward attainment of outcomes.

  • Evaluates thepatient/family's understanding of and response to the planof care.
  • Utilizes systematic and ongoingassessment data to revise nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and the planof care.
  • Involves the patient, family andhealthcare team members in the evaluationprocess.
  • Provides a comprehensive clinicalhandover/report as required to ensure patientsafety.
  • Attends patient care rounds,communicates, and updates the attending healthcare provider onchanges in the patient'scondition.
  • Communicates with the patient careteam about ongoing changes in patient's plan of care andunit activity
  • Documents the reassessment ofpatient status; patient and family participation and understanding;and the rationale for any revision in the plan ofcare.

Evidence-based Practice andResearch: Integrates evidence and research findings intopractice.

  • Utilizes currentevidence-based nursing knowledge, including research findings, toguide and evaluate practice.
  • Participates inevidence-based and research activities at various levelsappropriate to the nurse's level of education andposition.
  • Shares evidence-based and researchfindings with healthcare teammembers.
  • Participates in performanceimprovement projects for the evaluation and improvement of clinicalpractice
