KeyResponsibilities:

  • Conduct regular inspections andmaintenance of marine engines, identifying and resolving any issuespromptly.
  • Collaborate with the engineering teamto perform routine servicing andrepairs.
  • Ensure the proper functioning ofonboard systems, including electrical, hydraulic, and mechanicalcomponents.
  • Troubleshoot and repair any faultson time to minimise downtime.
  • Adhere to safetyprotocols and guidelines, ensuring all onboard mechanical systemsmeet safety standards.
  • Participate in safetydrills and assist with emergencies.
  • Providetechnical support to the Boat Skipper and other crew members duringmarine activities.
  • Assist with the maintenanceof marine equipment, including life-savingappliances.
  • Maintain accurate records of allonboard maintenance activities, inspections, andrepairs.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatoryrequirements and reporting standards.
  • Handleand store tools and spare parts in an organized manner, ensuringtheir availability for maintenancetasks.
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory ofspare parts and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Marine OnboardMechanic, preferably in a marine tourism or hospitalitysetting.
  • Technical certification in marineengineering or a related field.
  • In-depthknowledge of marine engine systems and onboard mechanicalsystems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnosticskills.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations andemergency response procedures.
  • Ability to workindependently and as part of a collaborativeteam.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonalskills.
Desired candidate profile

1. Technical Expertise in Marine Engines andSystems

  • Deepunderstanding of both inboard and outboard marine engines,including two-stroke and four-strokesystems.
  • Knowledge of various marine electricalsystems, fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, andnavigation equipment.
  • Ability to read andinterpret marine service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technicalschematics to diagnose problems and performrepairs.

2.Troubleshooting and DiagnosticSkills

  • Strongproblem-solving abilities to identify mechanical issues, electricalfaults, and system failures onwatercraft.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools,such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and pressure gauges, topinpoint issues in marine engines andsystems.
  • Skill in troubleshooting electricalcircuits, fuel pumps, ignition systems, and other criticalcomponents.

3.Familiarity with Safety and EnvironmentalRegulations

  • Knowledgeof marine safety protocols and environmental regulations,particularly regarding fuel handling, emissions, and disposal ofwaste materials (e.g., oil,batteries).
  • Understanding of safe workingpractices when handling hazardous materials, such as fuel, oils,and chemicals used in marine equipment.
  • Abilityto comply with local, state, and federal regulations to ensure thesafety and compliance ofvessels.

4. MechanicalSkills

  • Proficient inthe use of mechanical tools and equipment to perform maintenanceand repair tasks on marine engines andsystems.
  • Experience in dismantling, repairing,and reassembling various mechanical components, including engines,drives, gearboxes, and propellers.
  • Ability toreplace worn-out parts, such as seals, gaskets, pistons, belts, andbearings, and ensure all components are properly lubricated andfunctioning.

5.Electrical and ElectronicsKnowledge

  • Proficient indiagnosing and repairing marine electrical systems, includingwiring, batteries, lights, and navigation electronics (e.g., GPS,sonar, radios).
  • Ability to troubleshootelectrical systems on boats and ships, including working withcircuit boards, fuses, and relays.
  • Familiaritywith battery charging systems and electrical charging cycles onmarine vessels.

6.Communication and Customer ServiceSkills

  • Ability toclearly explain technical issues to boat owners or operators,providing recommendations and solutions in non-technicallanguage.
  • Strong customer service orientation,helping clients understand maintenance needs, preventative care,and the importance of system upgrades orrepairs.
  • Documenting and reporting all repairs,maintenance schedules, and parts replaced for clientrecords.

7. PhysicalStamina andDexterity

  • The role canrequire working in confined or uncomfortable spaces, such as enginerooms or under decks, for extended periods oftime.
  • Physical stamina is necessary for liftingheavy parts or equipment, working on large vessels, and performingmanual tasks such as engine disassembly andreassembly.

8. TimeManagement andOrganization

  • Ability tomanage multiple projects at once, prioritize tasks, and meetdeadlines, especially when working on large-scale repairs ormaintenance on vessels.
  • Organizing andmaintaining workspaces, tools, and parts to ensure efficiencyduring repairs and maintenance.
