Roles and responsibilities

The Principal Process Engineer isresponsible for interpreting internal or external business issuesand recommending best practices. They will be tasked with solvingcomplex process engineering-related problems and will workindependently with minimal guidance. The Principal Process Engineermay be responsible for leading functional teams or projects and isregarded as a specialist in the field of process engineering. Assuch, they must have in-depth expertise in process engineering aswell as broad knowledge of the process engineering disciplinewithin the engineeringfunction.

Responsibilities

KeyTasks andResponsibilities:

  • Performconceptual, FEED, and detailed analyses and design as per designbasis, project specifications, design codes, andstandards
  • Apply in-depth skills and broadknowledge of the business to address complex problems andnonstandard situations
  • Prepare clear andaccurate detailed design calculations and analyses including designreports and - procedures
  • Manage own time tomeet objectives and (as Lead Engineer) forecast and plan resourcerequirements
  • Clearly communicate and explaindifficult concepts and persuade others to adopt a point ofview
  • When acting as Lead Engineer, inaddition:
  • Direct medium or large Engineeringteam as a Lead Engineer
  • Lead the Disciplineengineering design of the assigned work area and completed withinthe planned schedule and budget, in accordance with standards, MDR,and project-specific procedures and to a high professionalstandard
  • Plan, organize, and direct all aspectsof Discipline execution on the assigned project including scope,deliverables, schedule, and all manpower resources - agreeallocations with the Discipline Manager
  • Ensureinterfaces and deliverables are clearlyidentified
  • Maintain responsibility for progressand productivity, identifying any required correctiveaction
  • Act as project representative forDiscipline during meetings with the Project Team, Customerdiscipline lead, and relevant agencies such as certifyingauthorities, auditors, third parties,etc.
  • Become fully familiar with the projectscope of work, specifications, schedule, and all inter-disciplinerequirements; including identifying concerns as early aspracticable and taking appropriate initiatives to address theissues
  • Interpret contractual requirements asthey relate to engineering execution
  • Identifychanges to scope and promptly raise change notifications, includingproviding any necessary supporting documentation andestimates
  • Provide similar support for VariationOrders
  • Interface with all disciplines todevelop clash-free designs
  • Interface with otherdepartments to obtain input for Discipline designs anddrawings
  • Maintain close coordination with otherengineering disciplines, Planning, and Project Management Teams, asrequired
  • Document substantive communications(communications that result in significant decisions or assignmentof actions) and forward copies to the Discipline Lead Engineer andDiscipline Manager
  • Prepare estimates for bidproposals, including technical query reviews, execution statements,and work-hour estimates, identifying software requirements and anyother project-specific requirements
  • Preparebids and project's Discipline engineering budget andexecution plans, updating as required
  • Raisetechnical queries to obtain missing information, clarify workscope, and maintain preferred McDermott procedures, specifications,standards, practices, and operationalrequirements
Desired candidate profile
  • Review project schedule and fabricationschedule about construction sequence, milestones, and engineeringscope
  • Attend project kickoff and reviewmeetings, vendor meetings, engineering meetings, and offshore sitesurveys, as required
  • Provide technicaldirection and review of Designers producing products related toProcess Engineering
  • Prepare, review, and (asLead Engineer) approve design reports andprocedures
  • Assist in providing necessary designinputs to other disciplines to enable them to proceed with theirdeliverables
  • Review and (as Lead Engineer)approve vendor and subcontractor submittals, checking forcompliance with project specifications and providing comments asnecessary
  • Present issues and problems toCustomers promptly and assist the Lead Engineer in negotiatingresolution by project and companyrequirements
  • Guide less experienced engineerson MDR and Discipline procedures, standards, worksheets, designcalculations, software, requisitions, technical bid evaluations,technical queries, etc.
  • Supervise and guideassigned engineers and coordinate with project Lead Designers forDiscipline engineering and designdeliverables
  • Monitor costs of own workprocesses
  • Responsible for the engineeringintegrity of the assigned work area
  • Developcommunication and presentation skills (e.g., write technicalpapers, participate in conferences and/or seminars, present designsolutions and/or present topics at lunch and learns;etc.)
  • Responsible for checking the followingkey deliverables, applicable as per the Projectscope:
  • Process simulations / Heat and materialbalances
  • Process flow diagrams(PFD)
  • Piping and instrument diagrams(P&ID)
  • Equipment and instrument processdatasheets
  • Processspecifications
  • Operating philosophy and startupand operating manuals
  • Equipment list (processdata)
  • Line list (processdata)
  • Equipment and line sizingcalculations
  • Flare radiation and dispersioncalculations
  • Depressurization and flare networkstudies
  • Processstudies
  • Provide process assistance to otherdisciplines by performing IDC / providing inputs as required forthe following activities:
  • Layoutreview
  • Area classificationdrawings
  • Safetystudies
  • Electrical loadlist
  • Equipmentdatasheets
  • Instrumentdatasheets
  • ESD and F&G logic diagramsand control narratives
  • Participate in HAZAN,HAZID, HAZOP, and other safety/operability/reliability studies andworkshops
  • Assist in closing out HAZOP actionitems
  • Lead the Discipline team during projectaudits (internal, Customer, and third-party technical audits) andDesign Reviews
