Roles and responsibilities

The Senior Buyer is responsible forsourcing and buying at optimum cost, quality and availability,product ranges that meet customer needs thereby maximizing profitsand providing a commercially viable range of merchandise for MAFLifestyle business. The Senior Buyer will be responsible forsupporting the General Manager – Planning &Merchandising in defining and presenting short and long-termstrategic approaches, future growth opportunities and areas of riskfor the business with regards to brand assortment, ranging,products, positioning inventory andmargins.

ROLEPROFILE

  • Formulate a suitable buying strategy,approach and plan in line with Brand and MAF Lifestyleguidelines.
  • Direct and manage variousfunctional aspects of vendor sourcing/ development, contractnegotiation, purchasing, liaising with supply chain and warehouseto ensure optimum efficiency & performance of thefunction.
  • Ensure that commercial, yetprofitable product ranges are developed and bought in order tomaximize profit and sales.
  • Ensure the OTB isbuilt up by store, category andsubcategory.
  • Manage and control, in conjunctionwith the GM, all aspects of stock to achieve reduced lost sales,improved buying and balanced product mix through careful andrigorous buying.
  • Contribute to development ofannual business plans, associated budgets and buying strategies,monitor performance against this, initiating corrective actionwhere necessary to ensure operations are conducted within theagreed financial parameters and targets areachieved.
  • Responsible for achieving setfinancial targets in relation to all buying activities, OTB,margins, sell thru and markdowns.
  • Negotiateproduct pricing, cost of shipment and payment terms, intake marginand terms with local vendors, taking into consideration businessand cost effectiveness as the mainconsideration.
  • Maintain profitablerelationships with existing suppliers and monitor adherence to allcontractual terms.
  • Stay abreast of customertrends, demographic shifts and other influences to ensure buyingdecisions closely relate to customer preferences contributing tothe customer experience.
  • Conduct fashion trendsand product training of new launches / seasons to the store teamsas and when required.

Requirements

  • 4-5 years in a senior Merchandisingrole
  • Experience in a retail background ismandatory
  • A Bachelors' Degree,preferably in Fashion, Marketing or relatedfield
  • Qualification in Retail Management /Purchasing / Sales or related subjects

  • SupplierEvaluation: Regularly evaluating suppliers based onperformance metrics, quality, reliability, andcost-effectiveness.
  • BuildingRelationships: Developing strong, collaborativerelationships with key suppliers to foster long-termpartnerships.
  • ConflictResolution: Handling disputes or issues withsuppliers efficiently and professionally to maintain smoothbusiness operations.

3.Market Knowledge and IndustryTrends

  • MarketResearch: Staying informed on market conditions,industry trends, and emerging technologies to make informed buyingdecisions.
  • CompetitiveAnalysis: Monitoring competitors' purchasingpractices and strategies to ensure the company maintains acompetitive edge.
  • GlobalSourcing: Understanding global supply chains andbeing able to source products from various regions to optimizecosts and availability.

4.ContractManagement

  • ContractNegotiation: Creating, reviewing, and negotiatingcontracts with suppliers to ensure favorable terms for theorganization.
  • Legal andCompliance Awareness: Understanding the legalimplications of contracts and ensuring compliance with relevantregulations.
  • Terms andConditions: Ensuring that purchase agreementscontain clear terms related to delivery, warranties, paymentschedules, and penalties fornon-compliance.

5.Inventory and Supply ChainManagement

  • InventoryControl: Ensuring that stock levels are maintainedat optimal levels to meet production needs withoutoverstocking.
  • Supply ChainCoordination: Coordinating with logistics,warehouse, and production teams to ensure timely delivery andsupply of goods.
  • DemandForecasting: Analyzing historical data and markettrends to forecast future demand and adjust purchasing strategiesaccordingly.

6.Data-Driven DecisionMaking

  • Analyticsand Reporting: Using data analytics tools to trackpurchasing trends, supplier performance, and cost-savingopportunities.
  • BudgetManagement: Monitoring procurement budgets andensuring that purchases remain within allocated financiallimits.
  • CostReduction: Identifying opportunities to reduceprocurement costs while maintaining product quality and supplierreliability.
