The Director of Student Athletics and Recreation is primarily responsible for directing, overseeing and maintaining all aspects of the sports and recreation programs of AUS students.

The following areas fall under the scope of this role:

  • sports programs
  • sports facilities and equipment maintenance
  • racket games

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and visionary leadership, strategic planning and policy development for the Athletics and Recreation Department.
  • Establish and maintain a department that is committed to the university's mission and strategic priorities.
  • Provide overall management of the Athletics and Recreation Department budget and ordering of equipment.
  • Represent the university in meetings with regard to sports.
  • Provide maintenance and growth opportunities for external partnerships in the area of sports.
  • Maintain appropriate Athletics and Recreation Department policies, procedures and practices.
  • Plan and promote intercollegiate, intramural, fitness and recreational sports programs.
  • Plan and develop the AUS athletic scholarship program.
  • Provide administrative direction and oversight for all intercollegiate, intramural, recreational sports coaches, fitness trainers and sports facilities staff.
  • Oversee recruitment and management of full-time and part-time coaches, trainers and staff, including training, mentoring and evaluating them.
  • Lead athletes' delegations in local, regional and international sports tournaments.
  • Ensure the department remains in compliance with all university rules and regulations.

Qualifications And Skills Required

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required, with a preferred emphasis in sports administration, physical education, recreation or business.
  • A minimum of five years' experience with intercollegiate athletic programs as an administrator, advisor and/or coach with an understanding of the administrative, financial, fundraising and personnel-related responsibilities of an athletic department.
  • Experience in financial and budgetary responsibilities.
  • Track record of leading a performance- and outcome-based organization with strategic vision.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate staff and manage high-performing staff, including coaches, and the ability to set and achieve strategic objectives within a complicated budget process.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain a climate of commitment, a culture of respect, diversity, belief in service before self, sportsmanship and professionalism on all levels.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing and scheduling.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to stay abreast of current and developing trends.
  • Enthusiasm and the ability to thrive in an atmosphere of high stress and constant change.
  • The ability to occasionally travel to fulfill required duties and assignments.
