Job Description

The Material Engineer is responsible for selecting, testing, and ensuring the quality of construction materials used in civil engineering projects. This role ensures that all materials comply with project specifications, industry standards, and safety regulations while supporting cost-effective and durable construction practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, test, and approve construction materials such as concrete, asphalt, aggregates, soil, steel, and other building materials.
  • Conduct laboratory and on-site material testing to ensure compliance with project specifications, codes, and standards.
  • Review material submittals, mix designs, and technical data sheets from suppliers and contractors.
  • Monitor material performance during construction and recommend corrective actions when required.
  • Coordinate with site engineers, quality control teams, contractors, and suppliers regarding material quality and usage.
  • Prepare material test reports, quality documentation, and compliance records.
  • Ensure adherence to local and international standards (e.g., ASTM, AASHTO, BS, IS, or equivalent).
  • Support value engineering by recommending alternative materials that meet performance and cost requirements.
  • Assist in failure analysis and troubleshooting of material-related issues on-site.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional certification or license (if applicable) is an advantage.

Experience

  • 2–5 years of experience in material engineering within civil or infrastructure construction projects.
  • Experience with laboratory and field testing of construction materials is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of construction materials and testing procedures.
  • Familiarity with quality control and quality assurance (QA/QC) processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
  • Good communication and coordination abilities.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and relevant engineering software.
