Position Summary

Maintains responsibility for assisting the maintenance and operation of all life support systems. This position is also responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of the non-automated Life Support Systems in the National Aquarium exhibits. LSS technician is also responsible for assisting with the building maintenance as required.

The job holder will be responsible for the daily care of all the animals within the Aquarium. Specific focus will be on the Life Support System and maintenance. Ensure that critical life support systems are properly maintained in a manner that supports optimal conditions for animal health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the management all automated LSS components of the main tank aquarium. To monitor water levels and keep LSS components within their design specification. 
  • Assists the LSS supervisor / LSS Manager in the implementation of written LSS standards and protocols for all exhibits to ensure the highest standards for water quality, operational efficiency, cleanliness, display attractiveness and animal health.
  • With the LSS supervisor / LSS Manager Approval make improvements or modifications to systems to meet particular species needs or to improve general exhibit quality. 
  • To assist with the preventative maintenance on all LSS components in order to ensure uninterrupted operation of the aquarium long term. 
  • To assist with the establishment of a list of emergency protocols for dealing with long term and short-term potential hazards to exhibits. For example: power failure. 
  • Assist with the management all non-automated LSS components of the National Aquarium exhibits.
  • Assist to manage all warranty and supplier servicing agreements for LSS components and auxiliary systems (i.e.: generators, chillers, freezers etc.) 
  • To assist with the management all building maintenance including M&E and physical structures within aquarium areas. 
  • Keep all building fixtures and fittings in world class condition. 
  • Assist with the management all LSS lighting and area lighting and replace lamps where required. Determine if the aquarium electrical use is operating by the most cost-effective means. 
  • Ensures that all back of house areas deemed "plant rooms" are kept clean and free of clutter and LSS components of clean appearance

Position Requirements:

Educational Requirements:
  • 4 year degree in biological science or equivalent work experience
Work Experience:
  • Experience with working with aquatic systems in an aquarium, zoo, aquaculture facility or related field
  • Experience in building maintenance. (Painting, Pipefitting, Fixture Installation, Fire Fighting, Drainage, Toilets)
  Languages:
  • English, Arabic is desirable
Computer Literacy:
  • Computer competency vital – particularly MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Access databases
Skills & Other Requirement:
  • Sound understanding of life support systems including mechanical, biological and chemical filtration and sterilization techniques
  • Knowledge of the physical and chemical dynamics of biological systems
  • Knowledge of water chemistry
  • Ability to maintain record keeping systems
