Job Title: XR Experience Designer — Industrial UX (1 Position)

About the Job

We are seeking a thoughtful and pragmatic XR Experience Designer to craft intuitive, safe and efficient user experiences for augmented and virtual reality applications used in industrial settings. You will translate complex maintenance, inspection and operations workflows into clear XR interactions and interfaces that work reliably on head-mounted displays and mobile AR in real-world field conditions. This role sits at the intersection of UX, 3D interaction design and applied human factors — you'll run research with technicians, build prototypes, and partner closely with XR engineers, product and operations teams to ship robust experiences.

Responsibilities

Lead user research with field technicians, engineers and safety stakeholders to define user needs, pain points and success metrics for XR workflows.

Define experience maps, task flows, information architecture and interaction patterns tailored to AR/VR constraints (spatial UI, gaze/gesture/hand interaction, voice, contextual overlays).

Produce rapid prototypes (low- to high-fidelity) in XR and UX tools to validate concepts — interactive mockups in Unity/Unreal, or AR preview tools.

Design clear visual UI/UX elements for XR (HUDs, annotations, step highlights, 3D overlays) that remain legible in variable lighting and on constrained devices.

Run usability testing and field pilots; observe technician performance, capture metrics, and iterate designs based on real-world feedback.

Collaborate with XR developers to implement, tune and optimize experiences for performance, tracking stability and ergonomics.

Define accessibility, safety and error-recovery patterns appropriate for industrial tasks; produce checklists and acceptance criteria for pilots.

Create and maintain design systems, component libraries and interaction guidelines for XR across device types.

Document design rationales, user stories and hand-off assets for engineers and content creators (3D artists, technical writers).

Advocate for user-centered trade-offs across product, operations and engineering, and support rollout/training activities.

Qualifications

3+ years experience in UX or interaction design with at least 1 year designing for XR/3D interfaces or spatial computing.

Strong portfolio demonstrating product UX work and at least one XR or interactive 3D project (videos, prototypes or live demos).

Familiarity with prototyping and design tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD) and XR/3D prototyping (Unity, Unreal, or WebXR tools).

Solid understanding of human factors for head-worn devices: comfort, field-of-view, visual hierarchy, and cognitive load.

Ability to run user research and moderated usability tests, synthesize findings and translate them into actionable design decisions.

Experience producing design specs and working closely with developers to ensure fidelity from design to implementation.

Strong communication skills in English; ability to present design decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Degree in HCI, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Cognitive Science, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have

Prior experience in industrial domains (maintenance, energy, manufacturing, field service).

Knowledge of IoT/telemetry integration and experience surfacing live device data in XR.

Familiarity with 3D asset pipelines (Blender/SketchUp/3ds Max), photogrammetry, or reality-capture workflows.

Experience with remote-assist platforms and multi-user XR collaboration patterns.

Background in safety-critical UX or regulated environments.
