Job Description

The Fire Service Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality fire and rescue training in accordance with the standards set by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), National Occupational Standards (NOS), and Al Shamal Solutions' accredited framework under SFJ Awards. The role ensures that all learners achieve competence across operational firefighting disciplines through the effective delivery of theoretical instruction, practical training, and continuous assessment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have held the substantive rank of Watch Manager (or equivalent) within a recognised Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Minimum 10 years operational firefighting experience, including incident command, live fire operations, and rescue activities.
  • Recognised instructional qualification (e.g., Level 3 Award in Education and Training or equivalent).
  • Recognised assessor qualification (e.g., Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement).
  • Demonstrable knowledge of NFCC National Operational Guidance, UK Fire Service Incident Command System, and firefighter development frameworks.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills with the ability to manage and motivate diverse trainee groups.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and coaching abilities.
  • Commitment to equality, safety, and continuous professional development.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a multi-national, military, or industrial fire service environment.

Desirable:

  • Breathing Apparatus Instructor Qualification
  • Road Traffic Collision (RTC) Instructor Qualification
  • Compartment Fire Behaviour Training (CFBT) Instructor Qualification
  • HAZMAT or Aviation Fire Instructor Certification
  • IOSH/NEBOSH Qualification or equivalent

Key Responsibilities

Specifically, duties will include, but not limited to:

  • Deliver and assess competency-based training across core firefighting disciplines including structural, aviation, and marine firefighting, fire behaviour, hazardous materials (HAZMAT), and rescue operations.
  • Apply the Systems Approach to Training (SAT) methodology through all stages of course design, delivery, assessment, and evaluation.
  • Conduct live fire, simulated, and classroom instruction in compliance with NFPA 1403, NFCC Fire Training Guidance, and the UAE Life Safety Code (where applicable).
  • Ensure all training sessions are delivered safely, effectively, and in line with the risk management framework and local health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Prepare lesson plans, course materials, assessment records, and evaluation reports in accordance with the Course Training Plan (CTP) and Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) procedures.
  • Maintain accurate learner records, providing constructive feedback to support individual development and course progression.
  • Participate in standardization meetings, professional development, and continuous improvement reviews to maintain compliance with awarding body and MOD requirements.
  • Support course validation and external verification processes in partnership with the Quality Assurance Manager and SFJ Awards external quality assurers (EQAs).
  • Promote a culture of professionalism, teamwork, and operational excellence consistent with NFCC Core Code of Ethics and Al Shamal organizational values.
