Workshop Supervisor

**Job Summary**:
The Workshop Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the workshop within the transport department, specializing in the maintenance and repair of heavy vehicles and construction equipment. This includes managing a team of technicians, ensuring the safety and efficiency of workshop operations, and maintaining high standards of vehicle performance, quality, and safety compliance. The role requires strong technical expertise in the maintenance of heavy-duty trucks, construction vehicles, and equipment, as well as leadership and organizational skills.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- **Workshop Supervision & Management**:

- Supervise the daily operations of the workshop, ensuring all vehicles and equipment are maintained and repaired according to company standards and regulations.
- Lead, train, and manage a team of mechanics, technicians, and apprentices.
- Ensure the workshop operates efficiently, adhering to safety, quality, and maintenance schedules.
- Allocate tasks to technicians based on skills, experience, and workload capacity.
- Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and materials needed for repairs and maintenance.
- **Maintenance & Repairs**:

- Oversee the maintenance and repair of heavy vehicles and construction equipment, including but not limited to trucks, excavators, loaders, and cranes.
- Diagnose mechanical issues and provide expert guidance on the best course of action for repairs.
- Ensure that repairs are carried out on time and within budget, and that all relevant documentation (e.g., repair logs, parts inventory) is maintained.
- Coordinate with the fleet manager to ensure timely service and reduce vehicle downtime.
- **Quality Control & Safety Compliance**:

- Ensure that all work complies with company safety policies, industry standards, and legal regulations.
- Perform quality control checks to ensure repairs and maintenance work meets safety and operational standards.
- Lead by example in promoting a culture of safety, ensuring that workshop equipment and work practices follow the highest safety standards.
- **Scheduling & Reporting**:

- Develop and maintain preventative maintenance schedules to ensure the longevity and operational efficiency of all vehicles.
- Monitor work progress and provide regular updates to senior management regarding vehicle status, workshop performance, and project deadlines.
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, as well as service histories for each vehicle/equipment.
- **Budget & Cost Control**:

- Assist in managing the workshop’s operational budget, ensuring the optimal use of resources while maintaining cost efficiency.
- Source and recommend cost-effective parts and materials for repairs and replacements.
- **Training & Development**:

- Provide on-the-job training for technicians and apprentices to improve their skills and knowledge in the maintenance of heavy vehicles and construction equipment.
- Ensure that all team members are trained on new technologies, tools, and best practices relevant to vehicle and equipment maintenance.

**Experience & Qualifications**:

- Proven experience (minimum of 5 years) working in the maintenance and repair of heavy vehicles and construction equipment (e.g., trucks, excavators, cranes, loaders).
- At least 2 years in a supervisory or management role within a transport or heavy equipment workshop.
- Relevant technical certifications or vocational qualifications in vehicle maintenance (e.g., NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or similar).
- Strong understanding of hydraulics, diesel engines, electrical systems, and mechanical systems used in heavy vehicles and construction equipment.
