Responsibilities of a Practical Nurse

- Monitoring Patient Health: Taking and recording vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure. Observing patients for any changes in condition, such as signs of infection or complications, and reporting them to a registered nurse or physician.
- Assisting with Daily Activities: Helping patients with bathing, grooming, dressing, and other personal care needs. Assisting patients with mobility, including helping them walk or move from one position to another.
- Administering Medications: Administering prescribed medications to patients, following the doctor's orders and hospital protocols. Monitoring patients for any adverse reactions to medications and reporting these to medical staff.
- Wound Care and Dressings: Changing bandages or dressing wounds, observing for signs of infection, and following specific wound care procedures. Assisting with the care of surgical sites or chronic wounds like pressure ulcers.
- Providing Patient Education: Educating patients about their health conditions, prescribed treatments, and self-care routines. Giving guidance on how to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma.
- Documentation and Record Keeping: Keeping accurate and up-to-date records of patient care, vital signs, medications, and any changes in condition. Documenting nursing interventions and communicating them to other team members.
- Collaborating with Healthcare Teams: Working with RNs, doctors, therapists, and other healthcare providers to develop and implement patient care plans. Assisting in assessments and participating in patient care meetings.
