Roles and responsibilities

Job Title : Welding Supervisor (Offshore & Marine industry)

Experience : 5 - 9 years

Day- to-day operations:

Read specifications and perform pre-planning of job (Sequence of job, availability of qualified manpower, availability of WPS's, availability of welding, preheating and PWHT equipment including chart recorders and temperature indicators, back-purging requirements and plan as applicable, estimation of welding consumables).

Develop & review project risk analysis.

Develop and review Fabrication plan / build strategies including suitability of work and environmental conditions (ergonomic and access to weld, wind protection requirements, temperature, rain) in order to formalize the optimum utilization of yard equipment and resources.

Before start the job, ensure suitability and validity of welders' and welding operators' qualification certificates, suitability of WPS essential parameters range, verify identity of parent material, welding consumables, and proper working and environmental conditions are established.

Review Dimension Control / Fit up inspections reports and guide the team for necessary proceedings to give the best fit for welding.

During the welding ensure essential welding parameters (e.g. welding current, arc voltage and travel speed), preheating / interpass temperature, back gouging, are communicated to Welders and strictly followed as defined in applicable WPS. Also, cleaning and shape of runs and layers of weld metal, welding sequence and control of distortion, correct use and handling of welding consumables, any intermediate examination (e.g. checking dimensions) shall be implemented.

Technical competencies:

Basic knowledge of NDE / NDT techniques.

Thorough knowledge in various types of welding and brazing processes.

Basic knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

Knowledge and understanding of stress relieving processes.

Minimum International Welding Specialist (IWS) certificate according to ISO14731 or any other equivalent qualifications or DDW Welding Supervisor internal training.

Familiar with International Welding, Offshore Fabrication and Shipbuilding Standards (AWS D1.1, ASME VIII, ASME IX, ISO 15614, ISO 9606, ISO 3834-2, EN 1090, IACS Rec.47, DNVGL-OS-C401, EEMUA 158…).

Thorough knowledge of welding consumables designation systems, estimation, ordering, consumption follow up, handling, utilization and control.

Knowledge and understanding of preheating and interpass control monitoring including various heat treatment processes.

Possess knowledge of MS office, Planning and basic Project Management skills

Ability to prepare, read, interpret and follow method statements and procedures, specifications, drawings, and all other project discipline related and engineering documentation.

Desired candidate profile
  1. Welding Techniques: Expertise in various welding methods, including TIG, MIG, FCAW, SMAW, and SAW.
  2. Material Knowledge: Understanding the properties of metals like steel, aluminum, and alloys.
  3. Welding Standards: Familiarity with international codes and standards such as AWS, ASME, ISO, or EN.
  4. Blueprint Reading: Interpreting technical drawings, welding symbols, and specifications.
  5. Equipment Operation: Proficiency in setting up and maintaining welding machines and tools.

Quality Assurance Skills

  1. Inspection Techniques: Performing visual and non-destructive testing (NDT), such as ultrasonic or radiographic testing.
  2. Defect Identification: Recognizing common welding defects like porosity, cracks, and incomplete fusion.
  3. Documentation: Maintaining welding logs, inspection reports, and quality records.
  4. Welding Procedure Qualification: Developing and ensuring adherence to Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).

Safety and Compliance

  1. Workplace Safety: Knowledge of OSHA or equivalent safety regulations.
  2. Hazard Identification: Recognizing risks related to welding operations, such as fumes, sparks, and high heat.
  3. Safety Training: Ensuring team members are trained in the safe use of equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  4. Emergency Preparedness: Developing and implementing emergency response procedures.

Leadership and Team Management

  1. Team Supervision: Overseeing welders and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently.
  2. Training and Mentorship: Guiding team members to improve skills and adhere to standards.
  3. Conflict Resolution: Addressing disputes or challenges within the team effectively.
  4. Motivation: Encouraging a positive and productive work environment.

Project Management

  1. Scheduling: Planning and coordinating welding activities to meet deadlines.
  2. Resource Allocation: Ensuring optimal use of manpower, materials, and equipment.
  3. Cost Management: Monitoring expenses and minimizing wastage.
  4. Progress Monitoring: Tracking project milestones and adjusting plans as needed.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

  1. Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving welding issues quickly.
  2. Critical Thinking: Evaluating processes and suggesting improvements.
  3. Root Cause Analysis: Investigating the causes of defects or delays and implementing solutions.
