  • Interprets and verifies labfindings with regard to type and quality of specimen submitted.Correlates test results with available clinical information andother laboratory data.
  • Analyzes and evaluateseach process of testing to assure final results are valid andaccurate. Maintains and updates technical knowledge and skills byactively participating in department meetings, continuingeducation, and inservice instructions.Assists in development ofoperational procedures to ensure effectiveworkflow.
  • Serves as resource with automated andother equipment, and in standard operation decision-making.Coordinates laboratory operations in absence ofsupervisor.
  • Ensures compliance with QualityControl and Quality Assurance Programs. Addresses quality ofservice issues, and to implement internal quality assurancemonitors or projects.
  • Takes corrective actionto resolve problems. Reviews unresolved problems with supervisor.Reports action limit results according to standardprocedures.
  • May serve as Testing Personnel asdefined by CLIA 88 for High Complexity Testing. The testingpersonnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performanceand for reporting test results. Each individual performs only thosehigh complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratorydirector and require a degree of skill commensurate with theindividuals education, training or experience, and technicalabilities. Each individual performing high complexity testing mustfollow the laboratorys procedures for specimen handling andprocessing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records ofpatient test results; maintain records that demonstrate thatproficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner aspatient specimens; adhere to the laboratorys quality controlpolicies, document all quality control activities, instrument andprocedural calibrations and maintenance performed; Follow thelaboratorys established policies and procedures whenever testsystems are not within the laboratorys established acceptablelevels of performance; Be capable of identifying problems that mayadversely affect test performance or reporting of test results andeither must correct the problems or immediately notify thesupervisor; and document all corrective actions taken when testsystems deviate from the laboratorys established performancespecifications.If not qualified to perform testing independently,must perform high complexity testing only under the onsite directsupervision of a supervisor.
  • Performsproficiency testing and reportsresults.
  • Advises providers and nursing servicepersonnel of correct procedures for collection, handling andprocessing of specimens. Assists providers in determiningappropriate laboratory services to be used for patientcare.
  • Assists in training of technical studentsand/or new technologist employees.
  • Assists indevelopment of technical procedures and in writing trainingprocedures. Reviews and critiques new procedures developed byothers.
  • Detects and repairs subtle instrumentand/or reagent problems.
