The Arab Monetary Fund aims to onboard a Senior Economist, Maghreb in the Reform and Surveillance Department, reporting to the Division Chief, Maghreb.

Job Purpose

The Senior Economist is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of policy recommendations, procedures, and initiatives aimed at strengthening macroeconomic stability and economic integration of member countries. This includes fiscal, monetary, exchange, and financial sector policies. The role involves conducting studies, research activities, and contributing to training and technical assistance, as well as synthesizing economic data and trends to conduct surveillance and design sound policy advice.

Key Accountability Areas and Activities

The key activities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Conduct day-to-day activities in line with stipulated policies and procedures.
  2. Conduct economic analysis and maintain effective communication with related departments and other relevant units internally and externally.
  3. Contribute to developing meaningful economic indicators, tools, and models to produce macroeconomic forecasts and policy advice.
  4. Contribute to establishing institutional views on various policy issues.
  5. Develop well-tailored policy advice considering capacity constraints and limited data availability.
  6. Draft detailed policy proposals and frameworks based on thorough research and analysis, ensuring alignment with regional economic objectives and best international practices.
  7. Conduct impact assessments of existing and proposed policies to determine their efficacy and areas for improvement and present findings in policy review sessions.
  8. Design policies to tackle economic and financial issues affecting member countries' balance of payments or domestic stability.
  9. Identify the roots and drivers of fragility, considering capacity constraints and limited data availability.
  10. Contribute to capacity building activities through training, workshops, and technical assistance.
  11. Contribute to the research activities of the AMF, including studies and publications relevant to policy priorities in member countries.
  12. Develop training-related publications and materials to disseminate knowledge and best practices.
  13. Guide and mentor associate economists.
  14. Work and collaborate effectively with relevant internal (e.g., departments/divisions) and external stakeholders (e.g., service providers).
  15. Develop and maintain effective and cooperative relations with national authorities and development partners.
  16. Contribute to the various work streams of the institution, including the AMF's analytical and research work on core and emerging global themes.
Qualifications and Requirements


• A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in one of the following areas is required:

  1. Fiscal policies and management, including macro-fiscal policy, tax and customs policy and administration, public financial management, including expenditure policy and administration, public investment management, and cash and debt management.
  2. Macroprudential, monetary and exchange rate policies, including central banking and financial system policies, operations, and stability, financial market development, debt management and debt markets, and sovereign wealth funds.


• Bachelor's degree in macroeconomics, economics, public finance, international trade, or related fields is required.


• Master's degree or PhD in macroeconomics, economics, public finance, international trade, or related field is preferred.


• Excellent communication and writing skills in Arabic and English. French, as a third language, is a solid advantage.
