The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, Sharjah, seeks a visionary academic to lead our Department of Humanities. We are looking for a distinguished scholar with expertise in African historical studies and the ability to engage students in an innovative and interdisciplinary curriculum.

About Us

We are a globally oriented institution dedicated to research, documentation, study, and teaching of Africa and its diaspora. Our mission is to train a new generation of critical thinkers in African and African diaspora studies. As part of the Global Studies University network, we aim to become a model center of excellence in research, teaching, and documentation.

Our faculty members contribute to the development of a dynamic curriculum and provide students with diverse learning experiences through a combination of teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching two courses per semester, guiding graduate students, and engaging in scholarly research and publication.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in African historical studies at the time of appointment. Faculty members participate in committees, supervise student research, and contribute to the vibrant interdisciplinary community within the department and beyond.

Job Description

This is a full-time, 9-month position beginning in Fall 2024. The appointed individual will be expected to engage in an active program of scholarly research and publication, participate in committees, and supervise student research, master's thesis, and doctoral dissertations.

  • Develop and teach courses in African history and related fields
  • Guide graduate students in their research and academic pursuits
  • Contribute to the development of an innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum
  • Participate in committees and contribute to the vibrant interdisciplinary community
Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Ph.D. in African historical studies at the time of appointment
  • Expertise in research related to one or more regions within the African continent
  • Experience in teaching and/or research in African diaspora history
  • Interest in African and African Diaspora intellectual history and political thought, and related movements such as Pan-Africanism, Negritude, and decolonization among others
