The Cardiovascular Perfusion Specialist is responsible for ensuring adequate circulatory and respiratory support during surgical procedures involving the heart. This role encompasses the setup and management of the extracorporeal circuit, calibration of physiological monitoring devices as necessary for perfusion, and operation of auto transfusion equipment, alongside maintaining accurate perfusion records.

Qualifications Required

  • Completion of a training program at an accredited perfusion technology institution
  • Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion

Work Schedule

  • Full-Time Position
  • Day Shift
  • 40 hours per week
  • Availability for 24-hour coverage as needed

Key Responsibilities

  • Operation of heart-lung machine or equivalent during cardiac surgeries
  • Ensuring all components of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit are functional, including the heart-lung machine, oxygenator, tubing, reservoirs, and safety devices
  • Evaluating the operational status of the pump console monitoring system and its safety features
  • Conducting CPB in a professional manner to maintain optimal patient physiological status
  • Monitoring patient parameters throughout the CPB process
  • Administering medications under the guidance of the surgical team
  • Regulating patient temperature, blood pressure, blood gases, and recording relevant data
  • Preparing medications and cardioplegia solutions in a sterile environment
  • Maintaining inventory of necessary supplies and performing routine maintenance
  • Managing autotransfusion processes

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump Responsibilities

  • Acting as a resource for nursing staff
  • Assisting with IABP insertion during operations
  • Overseeing IABP functionality in the operating room
  • Transporting patients on IABP to the intensive care unit

Prolonged Extracorporeal Support Duties

  • Maintaining devices such as CentriMag, AbioMed, HeartMate, ECMO, or other assistive technologies
  • Ensuring adequate supply inventory for procedures

Monitoring and Support

  • Monitoring activated clotting time (ACT) and administering anticoagulants as necessary
  • Observing laboratory parameters and circulatory status, assisting medical personnel in the management of prolonged support
  • Ensuring availability of supplies for anticipated changes in pump heads, oxygenators, or circuits
