Job Summary

Covanta is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Environmental Compliance Specialist to join our team. As an Environmental Compliance Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring that our facilities comply with all relevant environmental regulations and laws.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facility Permitting and Compliance: Support the updating of facility permits, plans, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Audit and Compliance Packages: Review and update facility audit packages to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Regulatory Affairs: Perform other duties as required, including interfacing with customers, sales teams, and facilities to aid in the approval process and completing actual approvals.

  • Requirements: Must be an energetic self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Internal Contacts: CSS Sales and Marketing personnel, CCSS Account Executives and Customer Service Representatives, CES Corporate Health and Safety Personnel, and CES Facility Personnel.
  • External Contacts: Customer Personnel and Regulatory Agencies.
Confidential Information
  • Confidentiality: Requests may contain proprietary information supplied by the customer necessary for the review process. Release of this type of information would be economically damaging to the customer.
Policy Participation
  • Policy Development: Assist in the development of EH&S policies and procedures applicable to the conduct of business by EH&S, Sales and Marketing, AE's, Covanta facilities, and customers.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in science (biology, chemistry, environmental science, occupational health and safety) or engineering (environmental, chemical, mechanical, industrial hygiene, etc.) or similar degree preferred.
  • Skills: Word processing, database, spreadsheet, and power point skills.
  • Knowledge: OSHA, ANSI, ASME, and NPPA, DOT regulations, EPA Clean Water Act, and RCRA requirements.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2+ years' experience as a safety and/or environmental professional responsible for compliance in the area of OSHA, ANSI, ASME, NFPA, DOT standards.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Public Speaking: Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Document Reading: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety and environmental rules, operating and maintenance instructions, Code of Federal regulation, OSHA regulations, and other consensus standards, and procedure manuals.
  • Writing Skills: Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Statistical and Analytical Skills: Excellent statistical and analytical skills.
  • Travel Requirements: Ability to travel is required.
