**Requirements**:

- Education: Bachelor degree in Nursing; Associate degree in Nursing from Canada or USA with minimum two (2) years course duration and successful completion of the National exam: USA: NCLEX - RN or Canada: Licensing Exam
- Duration and type of Experience: minimum four (4) years post graduate nursing/midwifery experience; master’s degree in nursing, health administration, business or management is preferred; supplemented with one (1) year of experience in clinical nursing/midwifery leadership and/or management is desired.

- Monitors and evaluates unit operations and services through organized Continuous Quality Improvement Initiatives to improve patient care.
- Ensures unit equipment and instruments are maintained in good working order.
- Monitors stock levels of consumables for reordering.
- Accepts responsibility for ensuring that his/her practice and conduct meet the standards of professional, ethical and relevant legislated requirements.
- Assists with developing priorities, goals, and action plans; develops and maintains scheduling procedures for staffing of care.
- Assists in formulating philosophy and objectives; establishes standards of care and practice.
- Selects, orients, supervises and evaluates staff members; establishes standards of performance and maintains an evaluation system for clinical personnel; constructively discusses their performance, counsels and advises them on professional development and to enhance standards of practice; assists with identifying educational needs for staff and establishes in-service/development programs; collaborates with professional and technical schools to enhance clinical education programs.
- Facilitates communication and problem solving for departments; leads or serves on committees; serves as a liaison between the medical staff and ancillary departments; promotes a nursing perspective when collaborating with the multidisciplinary team and acts as a patient advocate to ensure high quality client care.
- Serves as a resource person; develops, interprets, supports and implements policies and procedures; responsible for planning, preparation, utilization, evaluation and monitoring of budget.
- Ensures departmental activities and records adhere to regulatory requirements; evaluates the care given and makes recommendations to develop action plans for improvements; assists with development and implementation of service standards and patient satisfaction.
- Oversees compliance of staff to infection control practices and mandatory education requirements.
- Prepares and submits statistical data, monthly activity and annual reports to the Head of Department, as necessary.
**General**:

- Accepts responsibility and accountability for all actions and decision making within scope of practice as defined by DOH
- Adheres to the Code of Conduct for DOH, and the organization
- Completes mandatory specific competencies and demonstrates ongoing compliance with appropriate evidence.
- Develops and maintains own professional portfolio.
- Takes responsibility for own professional development and actively engages in ongoing self-directed learning.
- Obtains accredited and non-accredited Continuing Education Units in compliance with DOH requirements.
- Complete mandatory annual staff training requirements.
- Participates in self and peer evaluation including reflective practice
- Maintain any qualifications, including license and certificates such as Basic Life Support and other mandatory training within established timeframes.
- Complying consistently with all organization policies, procedures and practices relevant with position.
- Demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession.
- **Adhering to the Occupational Safety and Health and Infection Control standards**:All staff is expected at all times to practice in accordance with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety manual, policies and procedures; and infection control standards specified in the policies of the organization.
- Plans and coordinates unit activities; Conducts regular unit meeting with the all personnel.
- Conducts and maintains a safety culture for staff.
- The unit manager will also be expected to contribute to the wider organization development needs as appropriate within scope of practice.
