An oral pathologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the mouth, jaw, teeth, gums, and other parts of the head and neck. They commonly work with dentists to identify and treat oral health issues.

Oral Pathologist Job Duties:
Oral pathologists have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

- Recommending surgical procedures to treat problems identified during the exam, such as removing lesions or tumor cells
- Examining patients’ medical histories to determine risk factors for developing certain types of cancer or disease
- Conducting biopsies of suspicious lesions for analysis in a lab setting
- Performing dental exams and dental extractions to identify possible causes of oral cancers
- Conducting examinations of patients’ mouths and throats to identify possible health problems
- Conducting research to improve diagnostic methods for oral cancer and other diseases
- Preparing reports detailing findings from examinations and procedures performed during an exam
- Examining tissue samples under microscopes to identify abnormal cells and determine their origin
- Interpreting results of testing, examining patients to determine diagnoses, and providing treatment recommendations.

Oral Pathologist Job Requirements:
There are a number of qualifications required to become an oral pathologist. They include:
**Education**: Oral pathologists must earn a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field, such as biology, pre-medicine or chemistry. They must also complete a dental degree program, which takes four years to complete.

During dental school, students learn about the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the oral cavity, as well as the treatment of oral diseases. They also learn about the use of dental materials, such as fillings, crowns and bridges.

**Training & Experience**: After graduating from dental school, an oral pathologist will complete a residency program. These programs are three years long and provide training in the clinical and laboratory aspects of oral pathology. Oral pathologists will also receive training in the clinical aspects of dentistry, such as performing dental procedures and diagnosing oral diseases.
