Basic function involves all aspects of inpatient and outpatient oral and maxillofacial surgery, including infection control, pathology review and diagnosis, pain and anxiety control, hospital dentistry, emergency care and readiness and quality assurance. As an Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeon, the incumbent serves as liaison and consultant to the Hospital and as the final authority within the Dental Clinic in regard to matters mentioned above

3.1 The incumbent receives supervision from the HOD on critical administrative matters,

3.2 Functional problems and forecasting of future requirements and service.

3.3 Committee membership representing the interests of dentistry and oral/maxillofacial surgery on the hospital

and Dental committees previously mentioned.

3.4 Quality assurance within oral and maxillofacial surgery and dentistry through continuing education, department

meetings and record and case review.

3.5 Assure quality, ethical and cost effective delivery of oral/maxillofacial surgery within the hospital and dental

clinic(s).

3.6 Assure continuous, 24 hour coverage for emergency treatment.

3.7 Continuously monitor future needs of manpower, equipment, facilities and training in the specialty area and

related fields.

3.8 Strictly observes organization’s medical regulations and policies especially those related to infection control,

patient safety, patient assessment and patient care.

3.9 Performs other miscellaneous duties as requested by the Head-Dental Services.

3.11 Monitors clinical and other established indicators to ensure ongoing quality assurance.

3.12 Assure adequacy of equipment and sterilization for the delivery of related health services in the above facilities

3.13 Practices oral and maxillofacial surgery by the sum total of diagnostic, remedial and restorative services

rendered to patients. Typical duties and responsibilities are:
3.13.1. Diagnostic: of conditions of the hard and soft tissues of the teeth, jaws, supporting structures.
- Radiographic, laboratory, clinical evaluation.
- Relationship, if any, to systemic conditions.
- Treatment planning

3.13.2. Surgical Treatment: on conditions of the hard and soft tissues of the teeth, jaws, facial skeleton and

supporting structures. Nonsurgical management of other oral, para-oral lesions, e.g. erythema,

multiform, allergies etc.
- Minor oral surgery - removal of erupted teeth, removal of impacted teeth. Preprosthetic surgery

(alveoplasty, ridge extension) Outpatient and Inpatient: Excision odontogenic cysts, tumors of this

area, apicoectomy, root retrieval, biopsy, cytology, I & D of abscesses and supportive therapy.
- Maxillofacial Surgery: as according to training, brachial cleft cyst, thryroglossal cysts, if trained, jaw

relationships, correctable surgically when orthodontics not feasible (“orthodontic surgery”), TMJ

disorders.
- Craniofacial surgery including orbit and cranium
- Neoplasms of size, benign, malignant, according to training.
- Infectious - I and D large dental space abscesses, Rx and treatment actinomycosis etc. of jaws,

Caldwell Luc Sinus Procedure if dental etiology, Rx and management of oral infections such as TB,

syphilis.
- Trauma - treatment, surgical and non-surgical of open and closed reduction fractures of facial

bones.

3.13.3. Consultative: to other dentists, medical doctors (conditions of teeth and jaws.), hygienists, to outside

cases if requested.

3.13.4. Work Direction: Of dentists in exodontia and treatment of minor oral surgery cases.

3.13.5. Educational:

- As part of an educational program.
- Meetings - presentations of material locally, Middle east and internationally.
- Writing case reports, additions to literature.
- Oversee and liaison on medical problems of dental patients.

3.13.6. ER Call:

- Oral/facial trauma, according to training,

3.14 Comply with all OSH (Occupational safety and health )and infection control policies, standards and procedures

and cooperate with hospital management to comply those requirements

3.15 Work accordance with the documented OSH procedures and instructions, specific responsibilities

3.16 Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures

3.17 Notifying OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues and assistance with the preparation of risk

assessments, incident reports

3.18 Comply with Waste management procedures and policies

3.19 Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs

3.20 Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems

3.21 Ensure as far as reasonably practicable that any workplaces they manage or control are safe and without risks

to health, safety or the environment.

3.22 Ensure implementation of applicable HAAD, NMCRH OSHMS and infection control policies and standards

3.23 Ensure adequate budget and resources for FMS/OSH/PCI management.
