**General Characteristics**:
A Maintenance Helper is responsible for installing computer, telephone and network lines wiring, maintaining and repairing mechanical and plumbing systems, maintaining hardware, furnishings and specialized equipment and/or performing preventive maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment, multi-zone and heating/ventilating units, exhaust fans and other equipment, constructing, gardening related works, maintaining and repairing wood and concrete structures, performing remodel work and maintaining, protecting, preserving, decorating and painting the interior and exterior painted surfaces of buildings, structures, equipment and furnishings; performs minor maintenance; does related work as required. Physical strength and agility are required to lift and carry ladders, power and hand tools and maintenance equipment and to work on ladders, scaffolding and knees. Working conditions may include working at heights and in confined spaces. Electrical installation may require manual dexterity and good visual acuity.

**Examples of Work**:
Pulls wiring for computer network; assists with installing conduit and other raceways, diagrams wire installation and labels conductors; assists with locating and differentiating wires.

Picks up parts at vendors; may move furniture, desks, chairs and tables; may disconnect phones; makes deliveries.

Assists with plumbing maintenance and repairs; assists with replacing gaskets and rings; unplugs toilets, sinks, showers and drains.

Assists in planting, replanting, pruning and maintain of gardens/ plants.

Assists with repairs to piping; assists with maintenance/repair of motors, compressors and generators; assists with repairs to HVAC equipment, heating/ventilating units, exhaust fans, steel guards, equipment bases, tools, handrails, turnstiles, overhead doors, equipment (office, custodial, gym, child care, dental); replaces bearings, belts and filters on HVAC equipment; lubricates HVAC and laundry equipment; performs preventive maintenance.

Assists with repairing and installing dispensers, partitions, doors, windows and hardware; replaces glass; installs adhesive non-skid strips.

Assists with framing, installing insulation and sheetrock/drywall; assists with building forms, mixing and pouring concrete; assists with roof construction and repair; assists with repairing structures on interior/exterior of campus buildings; assists with suspended ceiling installations.

Assists with repairing carpet, vinyl flooring, formica and drywall; sets tiles; assists with constructing, remodeling and installing office furniture, shelving and partitions; finishes trim, base boards and window/door frames.

Assists with preparation of surfaces for painting, protects surfaces and objects near painting; may assist with painting; assists with finishing and refinishing wood.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:
Basic knowledge of electric principles and technology as required by the position; basic knowledge of plumbing equipment, fixtures, code and practices as required by the position; basic knowledge of carpentry and cabinetmaking as required by the position; basic knowledge of and skill in painting, painting equipment, surface preparation and finishing as required by the position; ability to read, understand and follow work orders and other instructions and directions; ability to operate power and hand tools safely; ability to operate a forklift, boom, scissor lift, van and truck as required by the position; ability to use ladders and scaffolding safely; ability to work at heights of over 50 feet as required by the position; ability to lift and carry furniture, desks, chairs, tables, ladders, power and hand tools and maintenance equipment weighing up to 100 pounds; ability to climb, work in confined spaces and work on knees as required by the position; ability to complete assigned duties on schedule and to work well with others; ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods; ability to bend, stoop and twist repeatedly; ability to communicate effectively orally; basic mechanical aptitude; ability to learn the layout of facilities, equipment, wiring and controls; ability to learn the operation of a variety of electronic test equipment as required by the position; ability to work safely.

**Supervision**:
Works under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Facilities Management and Planning.

Assignments are received daily in the form of job orders, oral and written instructions. Work is performed under varying degrees of supervision depending upon the complexity of the assigned task. Work is reviewed periodically during and after completion of work for quality, quantity and safety.

**Minimum Qualifications**:
High school graduation or equivalent is required. Six months of experience in general maintenance duties including the operation of hand and power equipment is desired. A current UAE driver's license is required.
