Position Summary
Middle East, Africa and India (MEAI) is a dynamic and complex sub-region of Edrington, responsible for the marketing and distribution of ultra-premium spirit brands such as The Macallan. Due to the growth of the region, we have a new and exciting opportunity for a Legal & Compliance Officer to join the team. Reporting to the Head of Finance and Operations, MEAI, with a matrix reporting line to the Head of Legal, Compliance & Regulatory at our corporate head office in Scotland, the role will be responsible for providing support across a wide range of commercial, compliance and regulatory matters for the business and it brands in a high-risk region.
Job Description

Some of the key responsibilities of the role include:

- Design and develop the MEAI compliance program that aligns with group policy and promote an effective and robust compliance culture across the region
- Implement and embed Edrington’s risk management framework across the region
- Where compliance vulnerability and / or risk is identified, develop and implement corrective actions
- Driving awareness and compliance to Risk Management Policy, Code of Conduct and Group Compliance and Legal Policies across the MEAI region through regular communications and training
- Drive compliance with the KY3P (Know Your Third Party) and compliance screening processes and establish adequate ongoing monitoring processes
- Drive compliance, regulatory and ethics initiatives across MEAI, ensuring they are aligned with the Group’s assurance vision and control Framework.
- Be the primary point of legal support in relation to other key relevant areas of compliance including trade, tariffs, export issues, marketing code compliance, product liability and health and safety matters and digital/social media compliance
- Working closely with the Head of Legal, Compliance & Regulatory and Group Risk & Assurance team to implement and coordinate regulatory horizon scanning activities for the region and to manage the response to any compliance related regulatory investigations or enquiries.
- Monitor and influence regulatory affairs within the region, attending relevant SWA steering groups.
- Review, draft and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts, including in the areas of distribution, marketing (including digital projects), customer engagement/loyalty initiatives, etc.
- Seek and coordinate input where necessary from colleagues across the legal team, driving the delivery of the legal team’s strategy within the region.
Skills and Experience
To take on the challenge of this role you will hold a Law Degree and qualification to practice in the region or hold a foreign legal qualification and have existing experience of working within the MEAI region handling commercial legal matters. You will also have compliance and regulatory experience preferably gained in a compliance or regulatory role either within a top-tier law firm or in-house within a global brand-led business. You will possess sound business judgment and have a track record of giving practical advice by balancing business needs with risk exposure.
You will be able to make sense of ambiguity and provide clarity and guidance over complex and/or technical areas, communicating on these matters in a clear and accessible way, both verbally and in writing. Working collaboratively to build strong rapport with internal and external stakeholders will be second nature to you and you will have the confidence and gravitas to work autonomously and with colleagues spread across a wide geographical area. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
