1. **Preventing Accidents**:

- **Surveillance**: Constantly monitoring swimmers and other individuals in the water or on the pool deck. This includes watching for signs of distress or unsafe behavior.
- **Educating the Public**: Informing swimmers about safety rules, water depth, pool boundaries, and proper behavior around the water.
- **Enforcing Safety Rules**: Ensuring that swimmers and visitors follow safety rules, such as no running on the pool deck or diving in shallow areas.

2. **Responding to Emergencies**:

- **Rescue Operations**: In the event of a drowning or near-drowning incident, the lifeguard is responsible for rescuing the individual, either by swimming out to them or using rescue equipment.
- **First Aid and CPR**: Lifeguards are trained to administer first aid, CPR, and other emergency medical care until more advanced help (e.g., EMTs) arrives.
- **Emergency Action Plans**: Lifeguards are required to know and follow emergency procedures, including coordinating with other lifeguards and alerting medical professionals when needed.

3. **Maintaining Safety Equipment**:

- Lifeguards are responsible for checking and ensuring that all safety equipment, such as rescue tubes, life vests, backboards, and first aid kits, are available and in good condition.
- They may also have responsibilities related to ensuring the pool or beach area is clean, safe, and well-maintained.

4. **Water Quality Monitoring**:

- In some settings, lifeguards are also responsible for ensuring the water remains safe for swimming, which can involve checking chlorine levels, water temperature, and cleanliness.

5. **Communication and Teamwork**:

- Lifeguards often work as part of a team, and clear communication with other lifeguards, supervisors, and staff is essential for ensuring a safe environment.
- Lifeguards need to be able to alert patrons to dangerous conditions, such as strong currents, bad weather, or dangerous waves.

6. **Being Physically and Mentally Prepared**:

- Lifeguards must maintain their physical fitness in order to perform rescues effectively.

7. **Documenting Incidents**:

- After an emergency or accident, lifeguards are often required to file incident reports that document what happened and the actions taken.
