**Description:
- As a decorative painter you have to review a job order, or his painting plan, and gathers the materials he needs; or mixes, heats or melts ingredients by hand or with equipment to make what he needs. He cleans and prepares the surface to remove particles that can interfere with paint adherence, such as old paint or dust, with various tools including solvents and rags, sandpaper, scrapers or steam equipment. He then applies paint with different tools, such as brushes, paint pens or markers, sponges or sprayers. After his work dries, he applies a clear coating, such as lacquer, to protect the work.
- As a decorative painter you also inspects and retouches previously-painted surfaces to fix fading, worn or damaged areas. If he has other decorating skills, he might complete a paint job with accents, such as foil or paper, using scissors, adhesives, or metal or woodcraft tools. If a decorative painter independently sells items that he or someone else decorated, or offers in-studio teaching services, he also often performs administrative duties including clerical work, marketing and selling. Additionally, he re-orders the materials needed to do his work, and cleans and maintains the tools and equipment he uses.
