Role Context
The Field Joint Coating Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that every coated pipeline joint satisfies project specifications, approved procedures, inspection requirements, and applicable international standards before the pipeline advances through construction. The position combines technical coating supervision with production control. Effective execution requires close attention to surface preparation, material traceability, coating parameters, curing, inspection, repair management, equipment calibration, and station cycle times. Because field joint coating forms part of the continuous pipeline production sequence, delays at the coating station can affect overall pipelay performance. The Supervisor must therefore maintain complete readiness of qualified coating technicians, calibrated equipment, testing instruments, approved procedures, consumables, spare parts, and PQT requirements before production begins.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise field joint coating activities at firing line and onsite construction stations during offshore and onshore pipeline operations.
- Ensure coating work follows approved Field Joint Coating procedures, inspection plans, project specifications, and international standards.
- Maintain coating integrity through disciplined control of surface preparation, material application, curing, testing, inspection, and repair processes.
- Coordinate daily activities with Field Engineers, Production Engineers, the Barge Superintendent, Quality Control, Certifying Authorities, PPG Coating Lead, Welding Supervisor, Equipment Lead, Welding Lead, and other relevant disciplines.
- Support timely production clearance by resolving coating-related constraints before they interrupt pipeline construction.
- Establish FJC readiness before production starts.
- Verify that approved coating procedures are available at the worksite.
- Confirm availability of Procedure Qualification Test coupons where required by the project.
- Ensure sufficient coating consumables, spare parts, calibrated equipment, and testing instruments are available.
- Verify that assigned coating technicians are approved and competent for the required work.
- Review planned FJC station cycle times and compare them with actual production performance.
- Investigate cycle-time deviations and provide technical direction where productivity is affected.
- Maintain focus on production continuity without compromising coating quality or inspection requirements.
- Participate in project kick-off meetings and coating readiness reviews.
- Contribute lessons learned during project setup and incorporate relevant improvements into coating execution.
- Support coating Procedure Qualification Tests before and during construction where required.
- Ensure PQT coupons are produced and tested at the frequency specified in approved procedures.
- Coordinate required inspection and testing associated with PQT activities.
- Supervise surface preparation before coating application and verify that prepared areas meet procedural requirements.
- Monitor handling and storage of coating materials and ensure consumables remain suitable for use.
- Oversee setup, functionality, maintenance, and operational performance of FJC stations.
- Monitor automatic and semi-automatic coating equipment during production.
- Troubleshoot technical issues involving coating equipment, material application, station setup, or coating performance.
- Liaise with the FJC Lead on operational and technical coating matters throughout system setup and production.
- Manage coating technicians and distribute daily assignments according to construction priori
