Job Description- Classroom Teacher
Reports to: The Manager
Purpose of the job: As an Early Years Nursery Teacher, you play a pivotal role in laying the foundation for a child's educational journey. Your primary responsibility is to create a nurturing and stimulating environment that fosters the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of young learners. This involves designing age-appropriate, engaging activities, and ensuring a safe and supportive atmosphere.
Duties and responsibilities
Continuous Professional Development:
- Stay well-informed of best practices in early childhood education through continuous learning and professional development.
- Share best practise with colleagues in teacher meetings/trainings.
- Seek opportunities for training and education to enhance teaching skills.
Cultural Sensitivity and Inclusivity:
- Embrace and celebrate diversity, ensuring that the classroom is inclusive and welcoming to children of all backgrounds.
- Integrate cultural awareness into curriculum and activities.
Classroom Support:
- Demonstrate good knowledge of the Curriculum and of the guided risk approach, keeping aware of current changes and modifications.
- Be fully aware of and implement all nursery policies, code of conduct and agreed planning.
- Teacher to ensure children attendance sheet is updated daily.
- Planning and implementing a program that encourages the physical, social, and cognitive development of each child and that follows the mission and vision of Kids Spot Nursery.
- The teacher is responsible and accountable for what happens in the classroom including and not excluding, the staff performance, daily routines, health and safety, progress of her students and keeping in line with Kids Spots vision and mission.
- Executing the Monthly Planning in your age groups – with each individual teacher's flare - linked to EYFS goals and inputting this into the communications App for each student.
- Implement guided risks into the EYFS curriculum, for more information follow up on the guided risk policy.
- Ensure that any late children should be dropped to reception after 9:00 am.
- To contribute to the wider nursery community, with ideas for improvement, new activity ideas, events, and excursions.
- To supervise teacher assistants and classroom assistants, to offer guidance and opportunity for growth and development.
- Ensure children are always supervised with minimum of2 staff members, during break times, of afternoon club when ratios allow.
- Being responsible for ensuring a classroom atmosphere that is conductive to learning, fun and positive interaction.
Administration:
- Teacher to ensure the "get to know me list" is updated monthly and when new enrolment such as allergies, timing, consent form, etc.
- Communicate with the admin team any instances of late pickup and documented in the attendance sheet.
- Weekly Assessments – accurately documented and up to date on Fridays, include notes from the TA & Teacher in training.
- Portfolios – Should always be the children's work, allowing for flexibility and choice, progress should be observed from month to month. Recommended to complete every month to ensure the portfolio book is up to date by end of term.
- Update parents on daily basis with factual information pertaining to their child's day.
- Ensure that any records of assessment are kept up to date, the head teacher and manager will check in on children's progress via the nursery application to identify discrepancies, delays, or trends in assessments.
- Ensure that the class file is organized properly, kept up to date and shared with team members to ensure everyone has access to the needed information.
- Paper attendance – Month end hand the attendance sheet to reception to scan to one drive.
- Observational check points are to be written out for each child and a ''2-year observation. You will find these sheets on one drive.
- Ensure a ''termly report'' document is completed every term, the head teacher and manager will oversee this before approving the report.
- Ensure the classroom assistants complete the daily health and safety checklists and give them to reception to scan.
- On a Thursday the teacher must ensure that any maintenance lists are sent to the supplies officer.
- Teacher resource requests are submitted by the middle of each month, ready for the next topic.
Individualized support:
- Adapting the program to the needs of the individual child with concern for his/her interests, nee ds, talents and individual style and pace of learning.
- Conduct ongoing assessments to identify children with individualized learning needs. If any specialized program/ support or needs are identified, an IEP can be created; An IEP can be created if any specialised p rogram/ support or needs are identified, this is to be shared with the nursery manager and head teacher.
- Helping each child to become aware of his/her role as an integral member of a group.
- Considering the individual child in relationship to his/her culture and religious background.
- Integrate special needs children in a positive and respectful manner. Work alongside LSA's, therapists and shadow teachers if required to develop a learning plan.
- Observe the child's learning progress in terms of the 7 areas of learning and the guided risk-taking approach, to maintain an accurate record of their developmental achievements.
Communication:
- Effective communication is crucial for fostering a positive learning environment in early years education. Here are key points regarding teacher communication in early years:
- Use clear, simple, and age-appropriate language to ensure understanding among young learners.
- Practice active listening by giving full attention to children when they speak, making eye contact, and responding appropriately.
- Utilize non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and gestures to enhance communication and convey emotions.
- Provide frequent praise and positive reinforcement to acknowledge effort, achievements, and good behaviour.
- Use visual aids, pictures, and props to support verbal communication and make instructions and concepts more tangible.
- Maintain consistency in communication and expectations to create a predictable and secure environment for children.
- Foster open communication with parents, keeping them informed about their child's progress, activities, and any concerns.
- Encourage 2-way communication, by allowing children to express themselves and share their thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Respond actively to their contributions.
- Be aware of and respect cultural differences, adapting communication styles to be inclusive and supportive of diverse backgrounds.
- Incorporate storytelling and play into lessons to engage children and facilitate communication in a more relaxed and enjoyable manner.
- Establish routine communication channels, such as daily updates via the communications platform, in person communication with parents to keep them informed about class activities and upcoming events.
- Teach children basic conflict resolution skills, emphasizing the importance of expressing themselves and resolving disagreements respectfully.
- Demonstrate empathy and understanding towards children's emotions, acknowledging, and validating their feelings.
- Use music and movement as tools for communication, making lessons more engaging and memorable for young learners.
- Participating in all staff meetings, parent teacher meetings, improvement strategies and feedback assessments.
- Participating in recommended training programs and other activities that ensure professional growth for themselves and their team members.
- Upon arrival, warmly greet parents and visitors, inquire about their purpose, and direct them to relevant staff or information.
- Greet and welcome parents at drop-off and pick-up, offering support and answering any questions they may have.
Resources and Hygiene in class:
- Be aware of and use the resources in the Nursery to enhance teaching and students' learning.
- Ensure that all resources are stored tidily and appropriately.
- Conduct regular check- ups on classroom equipment and furniture.
- Ensure the assistants complete and understand health and safety checklists.
- Ensure safety sockets/plug covers are returned at the end of each day.
- Ensure hot spot cleaning is done throughout the day.
- Ensure proper hygiene and toileting is maintained – Refer to hygiene policy.
Behaviour Management:
- Create an environment where good behaviours are encouraged and rewarded.
- Implement the nursery behaviour management policy.
- We do not punish kids, e.g. time out, scare children with other teachers or that their parents will not collect them, etc.
- Educate and provide on the spot feedback to any employee that is not following our way of behaviour management.
Code of Conduct:
- Being respectful and cooperative as a member of a team and helping to train members of your team.
- Establish a positive relationship with parents through daily interaction, parent teacher meetings and communications app.
- Embrace and encourage the ethos and standards of excellence of kids Spot Nursery. Uphold the nursery's vision and mission.
- Implement and support any decisions and policies made by the Management.
Qualifications:
- Must have an attested bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from a recognized university, preferably in education, early childhood development, or a related field.
- Familiarization with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum in the UK or the UAE Ministry of Education followed by the nursery.
- NFCE CACHE level 3 Diploma for the early year's workforce (early years educator) attested.
