Roles and responsibilities

1. Expertise in Applied Mathematical Methods

  1. Mathematical Modeling: Developing and applying mathematical models to represent complex real-world phenomena in fields such as fluid dynamics, economics, biology, engineering, and environmental science.
  2. Differential Equations: Solving and applying ordinary and partial differential equations (ODEs and PDEs) in various contexts, including mechanical systems, biological processes, and chemical reactions.
  3. Numerical Methods: Using computational techniques to approximate solutions for problems that may not have closed-form analytical solutions, including numerical integration, optimization, and simulation.
  4. Stochastic Processes: Applying probabilistic models, Markov processes, and other stochastic techniques to study systems with inherent randomness, such as in finance, queueing theory, and epidemiology.
  5. Operations Research: Utilizing optimization techniques (linear programming, integer programming, dynamic programming) for solving complex decision-making problems in areas like logistics, supply chain management, and economics.
  6. Data Analysis and Statistics: Employing statistical and data analysis tools to extract insights from large datasets, making use of regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and machine learning techniques.

2. Teaching and Curriculum Development

  1. Course Design and Instruction: Designing and delivering courses in applied mathematics, including topics such as mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, optimization, statistics, and data science. Teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses while adapting teaching methods to student needs and interests.
  2. Active Learning: Utilizing a variety of teaching techniques, including lectures, problem-solving sessions, hands-on projects, and collaborative group work to engage students in learning and enhance their problem-solving skills.
  3. Graduate Supervision: Supervising graduate students (Master's and Ph.D.) in their research projects, theses, and dissertations. Guiding them through the process of developing mathematical models, conducting research, and writing their theses.
  4. Assessment and Feedback: Designing assignments, exams, and projects to assess students' understanding of applied mathematical concepts. Providing constructive feedback to help students improve their analytical and computational skills.

3. Research and Scholarly Activity

  1. Applied Mathematical Research: Conducting original research in applied mathematics, focusing on solving real-world problems using advanced mathematical techniques. This can include collaboration with researchers in other disciplines like physics, biology, engineering, and economics.
  2. Interdisciplinary Research: Collaborating with professionals and researchers from fields such as physics, biology, economics, and engineering to solve problems requiring cross-disciplinary knowledge and mathematical techniques.
  3. Research Grants and Funding: Writing grant proposals to secure research funding from government agencies, research organizations, or private foundations. Managing research budgets and projects, and ensuring successful completion of research milestones.
  4. Publishing Research: Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed academic journals, presenting at conferences, and contributing to the body of knowledge in applied mathematics and related fields.
  5. Mathematical Software Development: Developing and utilizing computational tools and software to implement mathematical models and algorithms for research purposes, as well as for teaching applications.

4. Mentorship and Student Development

  1. Advising Graduate Students: Providing guidance to graduate students on their research projects, helping them develop their mathematical skills, guiding them through research design and methodology, and assisting with writing research papers or theses.
  2. Undergraduate Mentorship: Mentoring undergraduate students, advising on course selection, career opportunities, and guiding them on research projects or internships.
  3. Academic and Career Counseling: Helping students explore career opportunities in applied mathematics, including roles in academia, industry, finance, data science, and government, and providing guidance on graduate school applications, job searches, and professional development.

5. Service and Contribution to the Department

  1. Departmental Leadership: Participating in departmental meetings, committees, and decision-making processes related to curriculum design, hiring decisions, and strategic direction of the department.
  2. Service to the University: Contributing to the broader university community by serving on university-wide committees, participating in faculty governance, and engaging in outreach activities.
Desired candidate profile
  • Graduate with a Ph.D. from a reputable university.
  • The applicant must have at least (3) years of experience in teaching in an academic institution applying the credit hours system.
  • The applicant should have published papers in journals within the global databases (Scopus).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop and deliver courses to students in specified discipline areas of study, considering and aiming to achieve the three (3) fundamental standards of the University: Teaching, Research, and Services.
  2. Evaluate and monitor individual student progress and provide feedback to sustain student success.
  3. Research, organize and manage instructional resources, course outlines, and community networks.
  4. Actively seek out methods, procedures, and resources to best achieve course objectives.
  5. Collaborate and support colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities.
  6. Support and participate in accreditation initiatives.
  7. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (Arabic is a plus).
  • Excellent in developing and delivering presentations.
  • Excellent in creating, composing, and editing written materials.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of computerized student information systems.
  • Program planning and implementation skills.
