Roles and Responsibilities
  • Comprehensive Medical Knowledge

    • Expertise in diagnosing and managing a wide range of conditions, including chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, asthma), acute illnesses (e.g., infections, injuries), and preventive care (e.g., vaccinations, screenings).
    • Knowledgeable in pediatrics, adult medicine, and geriatrics, as family medicine physicians provide care for patients of all ages.
    • Understanding the biopsychosocial model of healthcare, considering physical, psychological, and social factors in patient care.
  • Diagnostic Skills

    • Ability to accurately assess and diagnose a broad range of health conditions, from simple illnesses to more complex, multi-system diseases.
    • Proficiency in physical examination, history taking, and interpreting lab tests and imaging studies to make informed diagnostic decisions.
  • Preventive and Wellness Care

    • Strong focus on preventive medicine, such as advising patients on healthy lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, smoking cessation), immunizations, screening tests, and early detection of diseases.
    • Knowledge of health promotion strategies and chronic disease management to help patients prevent or manage long-term conditions.
  • Patient-Centered Care

    • Building and maintaining long-term relationships with patients and their families to ensure continuity of care.
    • Providing holistic care by considering a patient's physical, emotional, and social health needs.
    • Active listening and clear communication with patients to develop personalized care plans and ensure patients understand their conditions and treatment options.
  • Clinical Decision-Making

    • Expertise in making sound clinical decisions that balance the needs of patients with available resources, considering factors like patient preferences, lifestyle, and family dynamics.
    • Ability to make decisions on the fly in urgent or emergency situations and manage multiple conditions that may require collaboration with specialists.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills

    • Excellent communication skills for educating patients and families about their health, treatment options, and preventive measures.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with specialists, nurses, and other healthcare providers to deliver comprehensive care.
  • Crisis Management and Emergency Care

    • Proficiency in managing medical emergencies and urgent care situations, including managing acute injuries, respiratory distress, cardiac events, and anaphylactic reactions.
    • Ability to stabilize patients and provide immediate treatment, including performing basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS).
  • Care Coordination

    • Coordinating care across various healthcare settings, including referrals to specialists, hospital admissions, and post-discharge follow-up care.
    • Knowledge of the healthcare system, insurance processes, and patient advocacy to help patients navigate their care journey.
  • Technology Proficiency

    • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems for documenting patient history, treatments, and monitoring outcomes.
    • Utilizing technology for patient management, including telemedicine services, patient portals, and virtual consultations.

Education

  • Completion of a family medicine residency program.
  • Board certification in family medicine.

Requirements

  • Valid DOH license.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
