Roles and responsibilities

As a Senior Engineer you will liaisewith the other backend and frontend engineers within your productstream, the QA team, the design team and your Tech Team Leads. As asenior member of the team, you will be responsible for advancingour development stack and ensuring scale as we grow to millions ofmonthly active users across manycountries.

In this role, youwill:

  • Hit the groundrunning - Gather up-to-date and in-depth understanding of thedubizzle code base and technologies stack withinweeks;
  • Lead planning sessions around newproduct features, deliver detailed roll-out/roll-back strategiesfor releases
  • Research and apply industry trendsas part of your daily work;
  • Create unit testsin accordance with our established standards to cover assignedwork;
  • Write and maintain exemplary codefollowing dubizzle's programmingpractices;
  • Actively contribute in post-releasemaintenance issues;
  • Develop elegant solutionsfor complex problems;
  • Pioneer reliability andefficiency of our current code base, platforms and/or coresystems;
  • Impact on the direction and scope ofdubizzle's technical vision within yourstream;
  • Work in a mentoring capacity within apeer-programming environment and provide guidance on tasks,irrespective of complexity or scale;
  • Codereview all major pull requests, defining programming standards andproviding constructive feedback
  • Design anddelivery of multiple REST based APIs and previous exposure toService Oriented Architecture;
  • Capacity to pushback requirements when incomplete;
  • Handle theentire software development life cycle, end toend;
  • Lead product planning meetings andarchitect solutions within your stream;
  • Liaisewith the other back end engineers within your product stream, theQA team, design team and your Tech TeamLead;
  • Liaise with other tech teams to shareinnovations from yourstream

Requirements

  • 6+ years of professional back-endsoftware engineering experience in Python(Django)
  • Experience with Cloud hostedinfrastructure and Technologies; AWSpreferred;
  • Prior experience with Kubernetes& Docker will earn you browniepoints;
  • Experience working on high-traffic andlarge-scale web products ispreferred;
  • Experience with web infrastructure,SOA, distributed systems, performance analysis, searchinfrastructure;
  • Been on at least one"death march" and know exactly why some thingsare to be avoided;
  • Strong understanding ofdesign patterns including asynchronous programming, queuing,logging, security and persistence;
  • Mastery ofdifferent caching layers and strategies includingmemcached;
  • Good understanding of build processmanagement and continuous integration;
  • Masteryof testing methodologies (unit tests, component tests, integrationtests, etc.);
  • Excellent communication &interpersonal skills; This is an absolute must, we have heateddebates around complicated subjects and you will be expected tolead conversations around them

1. Software Development andCoding

  • Designingand Building Software Solutions: Develophigh-quality, scalable, and maintainable software solutions usingPython. This can include web applications, backend services,automation scripts, or data processingpipelines.
  • CodeOptimization: Write efficient, optimized Python codeto handle large datasets, complex algorithms, and high-performancerequirements.
  • Code Review andBest Practices: Review code written by otherdevelopers and ensure that it follows best practices and codingstandards. Help establish coding guidelines for theteam.
  • Testing andDebugging: Write unit tests and integration tests toensure software quality. Debug and fix issues that arise duringdevelopment and in productionenvironments.

2.Architectural Design and SystemIntegration

  • SystemArchitecture: Take part in designing thearchitecture of software systems, including defining modules,components, and interfaces for complexsystems.
  • Scalability andPerformance: Design and implement solutions that arescalable and perform well, even with high traffic, large datasets,or complexworkloads.
  • Integration:Work on integrating different systems or third-party APIs into theapplication, ensuring smooth data flow and functionality acrosssystems.

3. TechnicalLeadership andMentorship

  • Mentorship:Mentor and guide junior developers and software engineers,providing support, code reviews, and advice on bestpractices.
  • Collaborating withTeams: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suchas frontend developers, product managers, designers, and operationsteams, to ensure that software meets user needs and is builtefficiently.
  • ProblemSolving: Lead efforts in solving complex technicalproblems and provide guidance on how to approach challenging codingtasks.

4. ProjectManagement andDelivery

  • AgileDevelopment: Participate in Agile methodologies,including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives. Workclosely with the product team to ensure requirements arewell-understood and features are delivered ontime.
  • ProjectOwnership: Take ownership of projects from inceptionto completion, ensuring that milestones are met, and projects aredelivered according tospecifications.
  • Time and ResourceManagement: Estimate time and resources required fordevelopment tasks, manage priorities, and ensure projects stay ontrack.

5. ContinuousImprovement andInnovation

  • ExploringNew Technologies: Stay updated with the latesttrends and technologies in the software development field,particularly related to Python and associated libraries andframeworks.
  • ProcessImprovement: Continuously seek ways to improvedevelopment processes, including software quality, efficiency, andcollaboration. Advocate for the adoption of new tools andframeworks that enhanceproductivity.

6.Collaboration with OtherTeams

  • Productand Business Requirements: Work closely with productmanagers, designers, and stakeholders to understand the productvision and business needs, ensuring that technical solutions alignwith company goals.
  • DevOps andInfrastructure: Collaborate with DevOps engineers todeploy applications and ensure the smooth operation of software inproductionenvironments.
  • Cross-FunctionalCommunication: Engage with teams across the company(e.g., marketing, sales, support) to ensure that the softwareaddresses all stakeholder needs.
