Roles and responsibilities

As a SeniorGeotechnical Engineer, you are a highly skilledprofessional responsible for evaluating and analyzing theproperties of soil and rock materials to determine theirsuitability for construction projects. Your role plays a crucialpart in ensuring that the foundations, slopes, tunnels, dams, andother structures are built on safe, stable ground. You willtypically work on large-scale infrastructure projects andcollaborate closely with civil engineers, architects, and otherconstruction specialists.

Key Skills andCompetencies for a Senior GeotechnicalEngineer:

1.Geotechnical Design andAnalysis

  • FoundationDesign: Designing safe and cost-effective foundationsystems based on soil conditions, including shallow foundations(slabs, footings) and deep foundations (piles,caissons).
  • SlopeStability: Analyzing and designing stable slopes forearthworks, embankments, and other structures to prevent landslidesor other failures.
  • SettlementAnalysis: Evaluating the potential for soilsettlement under different loading conditions and recommendingappropriate ground improvementtechniques.
  • BearingCapacity: Assessing the bearing capacity of the soiland recommending the correct type and depth of foundation based ongeotechnical testing.
  • RetainingStructures: Designing and evaluating retainingwalls, anchors, and other systems to hold back soil and preventerosion, typically for roads, bridges, orexcavations.

2. SiteInvestigation andTesting

  • SubsurfaceExploration: Planning and conducting subsurfaceinvestigations using boreholes, test pits, and geophysical methodsto obtain soil and rock samples foranalysis.
  • Geotechnical LaboratoryTesting: Managing and interpreting results fromlaboratory tests on soil samples (e.g., grain size analysis,Atterberg limits, compaction, consolidation, shearstrength).
  • FieldTesting: Coordinating or conducting field tests suchas Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), Cone Penetration Tests (CPT),vane shear tests, and pressuremeter tests to assess the in-situproperties of soils androcks.
  • GeophysicalMethods: Using techniques like seismic refraction,resistivity, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to assesssubsurface conditions.

3.Geotechnical Software andModeling

  • FiniteElement Analysis (FEA): Using advanced software(e.g., PLAXIS,Geostudio,FLAC), you model soil-structureinteractions, settlement predictions, slope stability, and othergeotechnicalbehaviors.
  • Geotechnical DesignSoftware: Proficient in using design software toassess and calculate bearing capacity, settlement, and earthpressure (e.g., Settle3D,GeoStudio,gINT).
  • RiskAnalysis Software: Conducting probabilistic riskanalysis using software tools to evaluate factors such as soilvariability and the reliability of geotechnicaldesigns.

  • Under general supervision, performs routineduties.
  • Displays knowledge and abilities toevaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques,procedures and criteria to meet basic engineering and constructionspecifications.
  • Displays applications of soundprofessional judgment on details ofwork.
  • Independently performs walk-downs andinspections of installed commodities to assure conformance withspecifications and design.
  • Well experienced inEarth works, Enabling Works, Geotechnical Surveys, TopographicSurveyes, Geophysical Surveys, Marine Surveys etc Aware of AbuDhabi Regulations
  • Can work independently onSite and manage a small team of Inspectors/LandSurveyors

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelorof Science or Engineering from an accredited University in one ormore of the following subjects and a Master of Science /Engineering or PhD would be preferred.
