The College of Humanities andSciences, Ajman University, has an opening for the position ofAssistant/Associate Professor in Sociology, starting Springsemester2024-2025.

QUALIFICATIONS& EXPERIENCE:

  • The applicant must have a PhD from anaccredited university in the United ArabEmirates.
  • The applicant must have at least (3)years of experience in teaching in an academic institution applyingthe credit hour system.
  • The applicant shouldhave published papers in journals within the global databases(Scopus).
  • The applicant must be fluent in bothArabic and English (Arabic is a must).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES& RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and deliver courses tostudents in specified discipline areas of study, considering andaiming to achieve the three (3)
  • Fundamentalstandards of the University, those are: Teaching, Research andservices
  • Evaluate and monitor individualstudent progress and provide feedback to sustain studentsuccess.
  • Research, organize and manageinstructional resources, courses outlines, and communitynetworks.
  • Actively seek out methods, proceduresand resources to best achieve courseobjectives.
  • Support and participate inaccreditation initiatives.
  • Performmiscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

SkillsRequired:

1. Expertise inSociology

  • In-DepthKnowledge: Mastery of various subfields of sociology(e.g., social theory, research methods, criminology, inequality,social change, family, race and ethnicity, gender studies,etc.).
  • Current Trends andTheories: Keeping up-to-date with the latestdevelopments, trends, and emerging theories in the field ofsociology.
  • Specialization:Often, full professors have a particular area of specialization orfocus, such as quantitative or qualitative research, social policy,urban studies, or globalsociology.

2. ResearchSkills and AcademicScholarship

  • ResearchLeadership: Leading and conducting independent,original research that contributes to advancing the field ofsociology. This includes formulating research questions, designingstudies, analyzing data, and drawing meaningfulconclusions.
  • Publication:Publishing scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals, books, oredited volumes. A full professor is typically expected to have anextensive publication record that demonstrates significantcontributions to sociologicalknowledge.
  • GrantWriting: Securing research funding throughcompetitive grants, which is often essential for sustainingresearch programs andprojects.
  • Critical Thinking andAnalysis: Applying critical thinking skills toassess, interpret, and analyze complex socialphenomena.

3. TeachingandMentorship

  • CourseDevelopment and Delivery: Designing and deliveringhigh-quality, engaging courses that cover foundational and advancedtopics in sociology. This may include undergraduate, graduate, andeven doctoral-levelcourses.
  • PedagogicalSkills: Utilizing a variety of teaching methods(lectures, seminars, discussions, case studies, etc.) to cater todiverse learning styles and help students grasp complexsociological concepts.
  • StudentSupervision: Mentoring graduate students,supervising their research projects, theses, and dissertations, andguiding them through the academic developmentprocess.
  • Feedback andEvaluation: Providing constructive feedback onstudents’ work, encouraging academic growth, andfostering critical thinking and independentanalysis.

4. Leadershipand Service to the AcademicCommunity

  • InstitutionalService: Contributing to the development of theacademic institution through participation in committees, facultymeetings, and strategic planninginitiatives.
  • DepartmentalLeadership: Taking on leadership roles within thedepartment, such as chairing or coordinating committees, managingprograms, or leading curriculumdevelopment.
  • ProfessionalService: Serving on editorial boards for academicjournals, organizing conferences, or participating in professionalassociations, thereby contributing to the broader academiccommunity.
  • InterdisciplinaryCollaboration: Engaging in collaborative researchwith scholars from other disciplines, as sociology often intersectswith fields like political science, psychology, economics, andanthropology.

5.CommunicationSkills

  • PublicSpeaking: Delivering lectures, presentations, andspeeches to students, colleagues, and at conferences, often infront of largeaudiences.
  • AcademicWriting: Writing clear, concise, and persuasiveresearch papers, articles, and books for academicaudiences.
  • Grant and ProposalWriting: Writing grant proposals to secure fundingfor research projects and institutionaldevelopment.

  • PhDSupervision: Supervising PhD students, helping themdevelop their research questions, methodologies, and academicwriting.
  • CareerDevelopment: Providing advice and support to juniorfaculty, helping them navigate their academic careers, researchagendas, and professionaldevelopment.
