JOBSUMMARY:
PerformsGeneral and vascular ultrasound procedures.

Utilizes ultrasoundequipment producing high frequency sound waves to create diagnosticimages of the human body for use in diagnosis of disease or organmalfunctions.

Works independently and takes direction fromradiologists and physicians. The Ultrasonographer reports to theMedical Imaging Manager.

JOBSKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
*Instruct patients regarding procedures to ensure cooperation andoptimum test results.

  • Transports patients to and fromeach procedure.
  • Knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy andphysiology to sufficiently pinpoint area of imaging.
*Perform ultrasonic diagnostic procedures in accordance withaccepted protocols as directed by physicians.

  • Selectstransducer, and makes equipment adjustments according to nature oftest, depth of field and other specifications of thetest.
  • Conducts actual test procedure; moves transducerby hand over specified area of body and observes sound wave displayscreen to monitor quality of ultrasound image produced.
*Enters required patient information into computer to become part oftest record.

  • Ensures confidentiality of patientrecords.
  • Uses independent judgment during thesonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal andpathologic findings.
  • Proficient in taking vitalsigns.
  • Observes patient and equipment during proceduresto assure patient and technologist safety and report any problemsto the Medical Imaging Manager immediately.
  • Clean anddisinfect room/equipment after each procedure.
  • Performssuch preventive maintenance, quality control, and calibrations asrequired or outlined in the manufacturer'srecommendation.
  • Maintain ultrasound and vascular labequipment in appropriate operating condition.
*Recognizes, analyzes, and takes immediate corrective action toresolve instrument issues.

  • Order and stock allultrasound and vascular lab supplies.
  • AssistsRadiologist or physicians with special procedures (i.e. cystaspirations, biopsy, thoracentesis, paracentesis and amniocentesis)following sterile techniques.
  • Assists other Radiologypersonnel whenever possible.
  • Maintain accuratedepartment records, reports and files as directed.
*Follow prescribed safety standards in operatingequipment.

  • Understands the use of personal protectiveequipment and wears them in accordance with safetyrules.
  • Demonstrates understanding of safety equipmentneeded to perform the job; radiation film badges, lead aprons,thyroid shields and gloves, plus personal protective equipment (eyeprotection, masks, shoe covers, gowns, gloves, etc.) and uses themas needed for self-protection.
  • Meets dress coderequirements; clean, comfortable clothing, no sweats, spandex, orblue jeans. No strong personal fragrances.
*Wears appropriate identification.

  • Has a thoroughknowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements forUltrasonography.
  • Has a thorough knowledge andunderstanding of the mission, purposes, policy, procedures, andstandards of the hospital.
  • Maintains compliance withMedical Imaging and facility policies/procedures as well as safetypractices.
  • Keeps up to date with best practices and newdevelopments.
  • Proficient in use of electronicapplications.

TRAINING ANDDEVELOPMENT

  • Completes facility education requirementswithin assigned time frame
  • Specifies personnelaccountabilities and regularly evaluates performance
*Attends facility and departmental meetings as assigned.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZATION

  • Able to prioritizework. Ensures deadlines are met.
  • Coordinates workschedule with Departmental Manager and/or scheduling desk to assureworkload coverage.
  • Organizes daily work schedule andperforms related clerical duties as required.
*Coordinates daily exams and/or procedures for patients of allages.

PROBLEM SOLVING

  • Follows Chainof Command for issue resolution.
  • Works with vendors totroubleshoot and resolve electronic applications issues.
*Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
*Must have the ability to make effective decisions by assessing andevaluating a variety of information.

  • Anticipatesproblems and plans accordingly; acts versus reacts.
*Complete facility variances and reports issuesidentified.

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Maintainseffective communication with coworkers and customers.
*Demonstrates excellent telephone skills.

  • Work as a team member within theultrasound department and all other departments.

EDUCTIONALREQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accreditedRadiology Technology program required.
  • Completion of anaccredited Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology programrequired.
  • Certification/Licensure: o
RDMScertification in one or more of the following areas:
Abdomen,OB/GYN, vascular, echo.

  • Basic Life Support certificationfor Health Care Providers.
  • Current compliance withContinuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies)as appropriate
  • Ability to follow establisheddepartmental procedures.
  • Experience with RadiologyInformation Systems, PACS, and electronic medicalrecords.
  • Strong computer skills.

COGNITIVE/BEHAVIORALREQUIREMENTS:

Time/deadline/shift/overtimerequirements:
Must be flexible and available to workdiffering shifts and weekends.

OPERATION OF EQUIPMENT/TOOLS:
Ability to operateequipment necessary to complete Medical Imagingprocedures.

Bottomline requirements:

1. Graduate of an accredited RadiologyTechnology program.

2.Completion of an accredited Diagnostic Ultrasound Technologyprogram.

3. Echoexperience.
