Patient Helper

Job Summary:


A Patient Helper, also known as a Patient Care Assistant or Nursing Assistant, provides support and assistance to patients in healthcare settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities.

This role involves helping patients with activities of daily living, providing emotional support, and ensuring their comfort and well-being under the supervision of medical staff.


Key Responsibilities:

Patient Assistance:

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
  • Help patients with mobility, transfers, and positioning in beds or chairs to prevent pressure ulcers and maintain comfort.

Nutritional Support:

  • Serve meals and assist patients with eating, drinking, and feeding as needed.
  • Monitor patients' dietary intake and report any changes or concerns to medical staff.

Hygiene and Comfort Care:

  • Change bed linens, provide oral care, and assist with personal hygiene tasks.
  • Ensure patients' rooms are clean, organized, and comfortable, including tidying up bedside tables and arranging personal belongings.

Emotional Support:

  • Provide companionship and emotional support to patients, listening to their concerns and offering reassurance and encouragement.
  • Engage patients in conversation, activities, or diversional therapy to promote socialization and mental well-being.

Mobility and Exercise:

  • Assist patients with range of motion exercises, ambulation, and transfers as prescribed by physical therapists or medical staff.
  • Encourage and motivate patients to participate in rehabilitation activities and maintain mobility.

Observation and Reporting:

  • Monitor patients' vital signs, symptoms, and overall condition, reporting any changes or abnormalities to nursing staff.
  • Document patient care activities, observations, and interventions accurately and promptly in medical records.

Safety Measures:

  • Follow infection control protocols and standard precautions to prevent the spread of infections.
  • Assist with fall prevention strategies and use proper body mechanics and lifting techniques to ensure patient and staff safety.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with nursing staff, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and treatment plans.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and report any concerns or issues related to patient care.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a certified nursing assistant (CNA) program or equivalent training is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital or nursing home, is desirable but not required.
  • Compassion, empathy, and patience in providing care and support to patients.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Physical fitness for assisting with patient mobility and performing caregiving tasks.

Working Conditions:

  • Patient Helpers work in healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers.
  • The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting of patients or equipment.
