Sustainability Specialist

The Sustainability Officer will playan important role in supporting the university's commitmentto overall sustainability, encompassing environmental, social, andeconomic dimensions. This position will oversee the implementationof sustainability initiatives, policies, and programs, ensuring theuniversity aligns with local, national, and internationalstandards. The officer's primary duties includeimplementing, and maintaining sustainability programs, providingsupport in training, maintaining records and documentation,liaising with regulatory authorities, fostering a sustainablecampus culture, collaborating with external stakeholders, andpromoting research and innovation in sustainability-relatedfields.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES& RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct sustainability assessments toidentify areas for improvement and prioritizeinitiatives.
- Implement sustainability policies,procedures, and programs across the university, includingenvironmental, social, and economicdimensions.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff,students, and external stakeholders to implement sustainabilityinitiatives and SDG-focused projects andresearch.
- Build and maintain relationships withgovernment agencies, NGOs, and industrypartners.
- Prepare regular reports onsustainability performance, including key metrics andachievements.
- Monitor and report onenvironmental performance indicators, identifying trends andopportunities for improvement, such as air and water pollution,hazardous waste disposal, and chemical spills, and implementingmeasures to mitigate or eliminatethem.
- Implement strategies to reduce theuniversity's carbon footprint and waste generation toachieve carbon neutrality and zero-waste campusgoals.
- Organize and facilitatesustainability-related events, workshops, and trainingsessions.
- Assist in preparing sustainabilityreports and assessments by relevant frameworks (e.g., GRI,SASB).
- Ensure that sustainability initiativesalign with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),QS Sustainability
- Monitor and evaluate theeffectiveness of sustainability initiatives by analyzing data,tracking progress toward goals, and identifying areas forimprovement.
QUALIFICATIONS& EXPERIENCE:
- Education: A bachelor's insustainability, environmental science, or business given that thecandidate holds professional certificates in sustainabilitymanagement or a related field (e.g., LEED, ISO 14001, IEMA,GRI)
- Proficiency in sustainability reportingframeworks (e.g., GRI, SASB) and carbon emissions and reductionplans.
- Relevant work experience: A minimum of3-5 years of relevant work experience in Sustainability, preferablyin a university or academic setting.
KNOWLEDGE& SKILLS:
- Communication skills: Strong writtenand verbal communication skills in English, as well as the abilityto communicate complex technical information to a variety ofaudiences.
- Interpersonal skills: The ability towork collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders,including faculty, staff, students, and regulatoryagencies.
- Computer skills: Proficiency in usingMicrosoft Office and other relevant softwareprograms.
- Project management: Strong projectmanagement skills, including planning, organizing, andexecution.
- Attention to detail: Strongattention to detail and organizational skills, including theability to maintain accurate records anddocumentation.
- Regulatory compliance: Knowledgeof federal and local sustainability and environmental regulationsand standards, and the ability to ensure compliance with theseregulations.
- Sustainability principles andpractices: A deep understanding of environmental, social, andeconomic sustainability principles and practices such assustainable procurement, green finance, circular economy,decarbonization, biodiversity, renewable energy, andothers.
