Senior Energy Storage Consultant

Overview Wood is recruiting a Senior Energy Storage Consultant to join our Renewables business in Abu Dhabi, supporting renewable energy, energy storage, and hybrid power projects across the Middle East. This role is based in Abu Dhabi, with opportunities for regional travel and collaboration with global teams. Responsibilities Lead BESS projects, providing engineering inputs from initial assessment through technical and economic feasibility, development, due diligence, design optimisation, financing, construction monitoring, acceptance, and operation monitoring Act as the primary technical point of contact for clients, ensuring solutions meet project-specific constraints and regional standards Prepare technical documentation: specifications, reports, proposals, Employer’s Requirements, fire and explosion risk assessments, and pre-fire plans Provide procurement and contract negotiation technical support, prepare tender documentation, and support tender evaluation Provide technical support to other teams and clients regarding BESS industry best practices and technology Technical assessment of BESS, including all relevant system components Collaborate with our solar PV, wind, green hydrogen, and other technical teams to deliver energy storage and hybrid power projects Conduct site visits across the Middle East and internationally Manage project budgets, timelines, and deliverables while maintaining client relationships Qualifications Skills / Qualifications MSc or Ph.D in Renewable Energy or a related field; Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or related field Expertise delivering technical due diligence and owner’s engineering assignments for utility-scale BESS across the asset lifecycle Strong advisory background with experience providing technical services to developers, lenders, investors, asset owners, route-to-market providers, and vendors Design review skills: ability to assess battery technology, power conversion systems, thermal management, battery management systems, energy management, fire prevention and suppression, metering requirements, and SCADA system designs Knowledge of revenue streams for BESS in international markets (Middle East, GCC, global) and related technical requirements Awareness of market developments, best practices, and technology advancements in energy storage with a commercial mindset Experience performing or reviewing fire and explosion risk assessments Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and regulations (GCC, IEC, IEEE) Strong problem-solving and analytical skills; flexible and proactive project delivery Right to work in the UAE (visa sponsorship available for international candidates); previous project management experience Excellent communication and report writing skills in English Desirable Experience in a technical consultancy 5–7 years of experience in Lithium BESS design, integration and development Academic background in BESS technology Experience reviewing and providing expert commentary on BESS contracts, warranties, and performance guarantees Familiarity with BESS technical inputs to financial models Hands-on experience in development, construction, commissioning, and/or operation of BESS projects (stand-alone or integrated with renewables) Experience with BESS test inspection, commissioning verification Familiarity with BESS technical modeling and forecasting (usable energy, cycling, performance analysis, degradation, revenue stacking, techno-economic optimization) Excellent communication and report writing skills in English; ability to speak Arabic or another language is a plus Valid UAE driving license or willingness to obtain one About Us Wood is a global leader in consulting and engineering, helping to unlock solutions in energy and materials markets.
