Job Summary

This physician leader position oversees the Anesthesiology Division within the newly established Integrated Hospital Institute (IHI) at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Reporting directly to IHI Chief Dr. Jose L. Diaz-Gomez, the Division Chair will be responsible for addressing a wide range of strategic, operational, fiscal, and human resource management challenges. This role will drive the integration of Anesthesiology services into CCAD's broader strategic initiatives, with a focus on growth, quality improvement, patient experience, and operational excellence.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Monitors and provides care to patients at CCAD within the Division of Anesthesiology
  2. Prescribes or administers medication, therapy and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease or injury
  3. Provides specific treatments and/or performs operations to treat patient medical conditions
  4. Evaluates patient and records applicable notes about patient's condition for purposes of serving as a record of treatment and/or making a possible referral to another member of the health care professional team
  5. Liaisons with other medical and non-medical staff at CCAD to ensure quality patient treatment
  6. Supplies, provides and manages care in a culturally appropriate and sensitive manner
  7. Adheres to individual approved clinical privileges, as well as to all policies and procedures of the Medical Staff

Leadership responsibilities:

  1. Develops a strategic plan for the Anesthesiology Division that supports the strategic direction of the IHI CCAD, and the Cleveland Clinic Health System.
  2. Defines the Division's scope and direction in the areas of patient care, education and research
  3. Creates a vision and supports members of the Division in their pursuit of excellence in the areas of patient care, education and research
  4. Provide consistent collaborative work with quality, patient safety and patient experience leaders within IHI and CCAD.
  5. Recommends criteria for selecting the department's or services professional staff and choose or recommend individuals who meet those criteria.
  6. Recommends space, medical technology, equipment, staffing, and other resources needed by the department or service and have a process in place to respond to shortages.
  7. Provides orientation and training for all staff of the duties and responsibilities for the department or service to which they are assigned.
  8. Responsible for recommending and monitoring outside sources of services that relate to the specialty.
  9. Assesses the cost effectiveness of practice at CCAD and recommends methods by which the most economical use of equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals can be assured without compromising the medical necessities of treatment
  10. Develops and implements, in cooperation with Nursing, Administration and the Medical Staff, patient care policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols and periodically updates them as needed
  11. Cooperates with leadership of other Divisions in setting strategy and providing care to patients

Operational responsibilities:

  1. Oversees and resolves issues relating to operational volumes, resource utilization, productivity and other administrative functions
  2. Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of patient care provided within the Division and IHI
  3. Ensures that the Division provides appropriate clinical outcomes data and physician level performance metrics to allow for an objective evaluation of clinical performance
  4. Identifies opportunities for Division performance improvement from both a clinical and administrative perspective and works toward enhancing performance to meet or exceed standards
  5. Leads patient experience efforts and initiatives for the institute

Fiscal responsibilities:

  1. Adheres to budget for the Institute/Department and analyzes and explains budget variances
  2. Ensures that all Division expenditures are in accordance with current CCAD policy

Human Resources Management responsibilities:

  1. Participates in reviewing and approving plans and expenses involved in the recruitment of staff members
  2. Performs annual professional review for staff
  3. Monitors and ensures high quality education and research programs

Experience Requirements

  1. For Physicians from Tier 1 countries (per medical license authorities in the UAE), not less than two (2) years additional experience post qualification
  2. For Physicians from Tier 2 countries (per medical license authorities in the UAE), not less than five (5) years additional experience post qualification
  3. Must hold a valid License/ Registration to practice in their home country and/or country of last employment (where applicable)
  4. Should meet the Maintenance of Certification requirements (where applicable)
  5. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a team of health care professionals
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and staff
  7. Ability to speak and write in English is required
  8. A previous anesthesiology leadership position is preferable

Education Requirements

  1. MD, MBBS, MBChB or DO (only if the specialization is obtained from one of the following: American Board of Medical Specialties or Certificates of Specializations of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada) or equivalent qualification from an accredited Institution and completion of specialty qualification as per the Recognized Specialty Certificate table listed in Healthcare Professionals Qualification Requirements 2022.
